When President McKinley and his party arrived at the G. A. R. cncampment at Buffalo yesterday afternoon they were the recipients of marked and enthusiastic at- tention. From the depot to the Niagara Hotel, a distance of two miles, the streets were lined with people, and at the hotel, in front of which there is a great square, the police and soldiers from the near-by barracks, even with the reinforcements of extras, had difficult work to keep the multitude in pcrition. Even when, with Mrs. McKinley and Gov. Black, the Presi- dent had entered the hotel, and vanished from sight, there followed after him the cheers of the people. » Was obliged to come icony, after some sort of order had been restored, he said “I come to greet you and to thank you at the same ume for your generous wel come. He was on the program to respond to the toast “The country and its defenders. Presi Responds to a Toast. Theodore A. Bingham, the superin- tendent of public buildings and grounds, has decided to remove from the parks of the city all the shrubbery and under- growth. This was decided upon at a con- ference with George Brown, the public gardener. The werk is being pushed rapid- ly, and will be continued as leng as the ap- propriation tor such work will permit. Col. Bingham decided upon this work be- cause of the bad appearance some of the parks have. as well as decause the im- mense growth of shrubbery has offered 0; portunity in many instances fer tramp: thugs, thieves and dissolute people of bo sexcs. The police have no power over these places, which are under the care of watch- men employed by the government. Mr. Brown says that unnecessary under- growth will be cut out of all the parks of the city, and trees will also be taken out where they are too thick. As fasi us pos- sible, and with the limited amount of money at hand, the shrubbo growth will be replaced by plants whi will not obtain a height of over three feet. ++ President's Doorkeeper at Banquet. Arthur Simmons, the veteran colored doorkeeper at President McKinley's room at the White House, in the absence of the President from Washington, is spending a brief vacation at Newbern, N.C. A special from that city tells of a banquet given in his honor by Prof. Isaac H. Smith. It was quite a preten affair, conducted in a manner creditable alike to host and guests. ————-+- AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c. . eterna to
