When the Senate Will Vote on the Tariff Bill. Senator Allison, in charge of the tariff bill, announced shortly before the ad- journment of the Senate last night that as no agreement had been reached for a final vote on the tariff bili he would ask the Senate to remain in session tonight at least until the bill was reported from com- mittee of the whole to the Senate. This promises a test of endurance unless the opposition to the bill give way. Mr. Al- lison’s statement was made after another futile effort to have a time fixed for the vote. In some respects the Senate made good progress yesterday, disposing of two im- portant amendments, one placing a stamp tax being agreed to with little or no op- positicn, ana without the formality of a vote, while the Spooner amendment pro- posing a tariff investigation was with- drawr after a protracted struggle. The ‘amp amendment, as agreed to, fixes the ollowing rate on bonds, etc.: “Bonds, debentures, or certificates of in- debtednes. issued after September 15, 1897, by any association, company, or corpor- ation, on each hundred dollars of face value or fraction thereof, five cents; and on each original issue, whether an organ- ization or reorganization, of certificates of stock by eny such association, com- pany, or corporation, on each hundred dollars of face value or fraction thereof, five cents; and on all transfers of shares or certificites of stock in any association, company, cr ccrporation, on each hundred dollars of face value or fraction thereof, two ts.”” Exemptions from the stamp tax are made in the cases of state, county and municipal bonds, and the stocks and bends of co-operative building associa- in the day several new amendments, individval serators, were voted on. from One by Mr. Mantle, Montana, reducing the irternal revenue tax on distilled spirits to 7 cents per gallon, was defeated, 23-41. An amendment by Mr. Mills, Texas, pro- posinj tax of 5 per cent on manufac- tured products, the proceeds to go toward reducing the bonded debt, was rejected, In Also an amendm: by Mr. Mills, granting 20 rer cent reduction in duties to those countries admitting gold and sil- to their mints at the rate of 16 to 1; nays, 31. vote one republican, Mr. with the democrats, and the silver republicans in the affirma- tive, and two demecrats, Caffrey and Gray, voted with the republicans in the negative. Sun's Rays Melt Fire Plags and Great Damage Results. The extreme heat beating down through a skylight in Detroit, Mich., yesterday after- noon, caused the blowing out of two auto- matic fireplugs. The torrent of water thus released flow- ed down through the building, damaging ¢ dry goods stock of Burnham, Sloepel & Co. and the clothing stock of the Peerless Manufacturing Company to the @xtent of nearly $100,000. ‘Che tireplugs were set to escape ata temperature of 130 degrees.
