14 = _THE EVENING ‘STAR. TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 1897-14 PAGES. COSTLY FOOD FOR *49ERS. High Prices That Prevailed in the California Restaurants in Those Days. From the San Francisco Chronicle. If life was not all “cakes and ale” among the “49ers; if among the vast majority the daily menu was limited to “slapjacks,” “hard tack,” “coffee and beans,” occa- sionally diversified by an unfortunate jack rabbit or quail, whose misplaced confidence in mankind brought them too early to the pot of the hardy miner, neither was it en- tirely devoid of luxuries in living for those whose appetites were on a par with their financial ability to gratify them. In San Francisco the luxuriously inclined were wont to seek habitation, whether for legitimate or legitimate reasons we need not now stop to inquire. Opportunity for self-indulgence of appetite was not wanting from the very beginning of things, pro- vided, as already hinted at, that good Cigesticn, while waiting on appetite, was supplemented by a sufficient supply of “sheckels” to give practical rein to its in- dulgence. Where the gambler flourished in all his glory, and the glint and giitter of gold passing from hand to hand on all skies was too common to excite observa- tion or comment, it need not be wondered at that no limit of price put upon the “good thirgs of life’ would prevent men enjoying them. n among the adventurous and hardy ‘oid hunters” the yearning for the flesh- s, which they had left behind them, did unassuaged when opportunity . no matter though the rate to be therefor was one far beyond the Is of what they had been reared to was more than the “height of ex- pass a scene in illustration of this writer may mention an incident month of July, 1849. From the Westminster Review. is a story in Plutarch which must ince every reader that one myth et st relates to an alteration made in the fan calendar to extend the length of the year from 36) days to 3 A year of ce days existed in Egypt at an early pe- ricd, and may possibly have been arrived at in the way suggested by Mr. F. L. Griffith. nar month, from new moon to new being twenty-nine and one-half days length, the convenient round number of thirty days wag taken as a standard, and twelve months of thirty days each made up the year. The solar year is more difficult to observe than the lunar month, the In- tervals being longer, and a year of 360 days a very convenient ard reasonable ap- oximation to It. At any rate, the year of = came Inte use, and a curious cus- tom at Acanthae, near Memphis, seems to illude to {t. A perforated vessel was filled th water by 360 priests on each day of » year. In the Island of Philae, again, » pitchers were placed around the tomb ris, for making funeral hbatiods, and filled every day by the priests with milk. With 30) days in the year, the iptic circles of the heavens, as repre- 4 in the charts, would be divided into # equal parts; and we must regard it as @ relic of this time that the circle is still rade to consist of 360 degrees. But so er- Toneous an estimate of the length of the year would soon be corrected by experience. It is evident that in about seventy-two years a eycle would be accomplished in which the New Year day would sweep ugh all the months, remaining only six years in each. The same month, so far as its rame was concerned, would now be in the inundation time, now in the season of sowing, and anon tn the time of reaping, end the agriculturist mest have been per- plexed. A text in the papyrus Anastasi makes reference to such perplexity, and may receive its explanation here. Guodwin translated it, “May Amen deliver me from the cold season, when the sun does not skine, the winter comes instead of the summer, the month is stormy, the hours shortened.” Similar confusion would over- take the religious festivals, the New Year, for example, coming five days before its proper time, and then ten days before, and so on; and it might be thought that its ob- seryance at the wrong season would dis- please the gods. The year of 360 days had to give way and ultimately did so in favor of one of 865 days. The precise date of the change ts not known, but it is referred to in inscriptions of the time of Amenemha I (circa 2400 B. C.), and may, of course, have been introduced much earlier. When this was done, the originel months were not al- tered. but a “iittle month” of five days was interpolated at the end of the year, be- tween the month Mesori of one year and the Thoth of the next. HOW HORSES ARE TAUGHT TRICKS. Trainer Tells How to Train Thoroughbreds. From the Chieago Tribune. “To be successful in training horses you must manage them exactly, as a sensible woman manages her husband.” That is the way in which Mme. Maran- tette sums up the horse trainer's art, and Mme. Marantette probably knows more about horse training than any other wo- man; perhaps more than any man. She is a Michigan woman and a sister of Myrtle Peek, both of whom claim Mendon as their home. She has been handling horses ever since a girl of seven and has been a familiar figure on race courses, at state and county fairs, and horse shows. Last fall she sold her stable of exh!bition horses to James A. Bailey, the circus owner, and she is now handling horses in that organization as “next best man” to John O’Brien. The horses that Mme. Marantette sold to Mr. Bailey were six in number, the most valu- able being Evergreen, a white menage horse, which she has taught to take all the steps of which a horse is capable, but which is exhibited by her in novel fashion, being driven to harness. Evergreen has fourteen distinct gaits. Moonraker, a brown jumper, and File- maker, jr., a sorrel jumper, are also ridden by her. Cyclone and Jupiter. two other jumpers, were sold by her to Mr. Bailey, but they are ridden by boys. Menage horses are a specialty in the Bailey show this season. There are four- teen, not counting the pyramid of seventy, Professi ner the madame’s stable. The best is probably Black Eagle, the ‘“‘couchee- couchee” horse, which was put into the ring by O'Brien in 1889, and does half a dozen different styles of dancing. Others of these horses are Oxford, a white jumper, which was formerly the property of Mayor Grant of New York city; Spiass, a re- trieving horse; St. Peter, a four-year-old that has been taught to skip the rope; Mufti and Romeo, two white Arabs, which do a double menage act; and Grimaldi, Gato, Sultan end Ashland, four full-blood- ed black Trachean stallions, which do a full drill, with pedestal piroutting. “I control horses by kindness and the proper amount of firmness,” said Mme. Marantette, deseribing her method of train- ing. “If they are good they get sugar; if they are stubborn they get the whip—but litle of the last. Horses are very like men. Sometimes they must be humored and made to think they are having their own way, when in reality they are doing what you will they shall do. For instance, if I am handling a “horse of high courage that is not thoroughly broken, and he in- sists on going one way and I want him to yo another, I turn him around several times and distract his attention, and the chances are that he will go as I wish with- out a controversy. If he persists I compro- mise by starting him his way and gradual- ly turning him mine. “I got my first valuable lesson in break- ing fractious horses some time after I be- came a professional horsewoman. My sis- ter was handling a vicious, strong-willed horse and used her whip vigorously. I sug- gested that she fought him too much and she said I would fight him, too, if I had to handle him. I tried him and we had trou- bie at once. I gave him several sharp cuts, but it did no good, then I lost my temper and whipped him severely. In a few min- utes I realized that I had acted fool'shly. The horse was so excited he was crazy. He didn’t know why I whipped him and was so wrought up he had no control over himself. I took him to the stable and let him cool off. Then I cultivated his ac- quaintance. He soon found out that I would not hurt him, and he put confidence in me. In a few weeks I had him under absolute control. (ime. Marantette is a slender, gray- haired woman, with the clear, gray eyes. She was born in Michigan, and is proud that she is an American. “The best horse I ever rofe,” said she, “was old Filemaker. I made the world’s record for high jumping on him. Rosemary was killed while trying to go over a fence an inch higher than the seven feet four inches that Filemaker cleared with me on him. “There is a great difference in jumpers. Some are good for high jumps, and some for broad. Senator, the horse I ride now, would make a-better broad jumper than a high. He rises some distance back, and has a tfemendous forward movement. Old Filemaker rose close to the barrier, with his hind feet well up under him, and went nearly straight up. Oxford, the gray Jumper, has the same movement, but he hasn’t got Filemaker’s courage. He won't take a jump that he can't see over. No horse can be a great jumper unless he has high temper. He should be at least half thoroughbred. The warm racing blood sives them courage. oe Dead Man at the Reins. Fron, the New York Sun. Christian N. Stauffer, a leaf tobacco dealer of Salunga, Pa., and his Wife left their home this afternoon to drive to Lan- caster. After driving a short distance a team passed in an opposite direction. Stauf- fer’s horse became frightened and started to run away. Mrs. Stauffer saw that her husband had lost control of his horse and undertook to help him check the speed of the runaway. She caught holé of the reins and was horrified to find that her husbaad was dead. A physician pronounced heart disease the cause of death, being brought on by excitement. Mr. Stauffer was about forty-eight years of age. ——— + e+ ____ AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c.
