THE EVENING STAR. TUESDAY, JUNE 22, 1897-14 PAGES. — = THE SPY WHO TOOK ATLANTA. fo This Day No One Known Whether It Was Man or Woman. Prom the Chicago Chronicle. In the spring of 1861 Atlanta was full of Johnston's officers and soldiers. An un- eacy feeling prevailed in every circle, and it was feared that the federals might any @ay make a forced march or a raid and surprise the city. Still the people faced the situation cour- sgeously. They had passed through so many dangers that they were not easily frightened. The sullen boom of Sherman's big suns could then be heard forty miles away, but Atlanta maintained her usual serenity. outwardly and gave no sign of her secret misgivings. The theater was then on its last legs, Dut occasional performances were liberally patronized. One of the star attractions in @ strolling company at that time was @ pretty black-eyed young woman, about twenty years old, who carried the town by storm. ‘This girl was a wonder. She was eaual- Ty at home in tragedy and comedy. She could sing and dance, and when she took @ male part in a play she was a howling succes: ‘A better all-round artist had never visit- ed Atlanta, and that was the general ver- dict. When she told her story It excited sym- pathy. She was a creole of Louisiana, aud her family had been murdered by a raiding party of Butler's troops. She had taken refuge in the confederacy, and, having no relations or friend had decided to use her rare dramatic gifts and earn her own living. The story made the pretty actress very popular, and she was pairon- ized tn a social way by leading citizens. Young officers took her out driving, and generals and colonels showed her over ¢ fortifications, which were then nearly fin- ished. The creole’s curiosity about such maiters charmed the military men. afforded them the greatest possible pleas- ure to answer her questions and explain every doubtful point. Several weeks rolled by, and when her company disbanded mained in Atlanta. She established herself at a yop- ular boarding house and told her friends that she needed a rest before going on the Richmon¢ She received a great deal of attention and was practically the belle of the army. The lines were closing around the city, but the creole charmer still lin- gered. The officers of Johnston's army were at her feet. They seat her costly presents and every fine day they might have been seen riding with her along the lines of breastworks Suddenly the actress disappeared. The military men were nearly crazy because they could not trace her, but the ladies of the city did not seem to cegret her de- parture—in fact, they hinted that she was no better than she should be. The month of June slipped by and there were no tid- ings from the missing s Then came July and with it tne beginning of the siege. At such a critical time people soon for- got the favorite of the footlights, and at the end of forty d. shelling people were thinking of far more important matters. The sieze was over at last and the federals marched in p One fine morning a western corps comi- mander. with his staff, rode th city and took a look at the fo At his sic a small, dark-faced eyed young man, who acted as his suide and pointed out various things of est. A prominent Atlanta man met t youngster f to face, and his surort caused him to stand almost paralyzed his tracks. He was the pretty actress who had turned th «is of so many officers! The strang met those of the At- lanta man and snapped viciously. Then a mocking smile spread over his piquant face, and his glance was plainly one of re tion. The Georgian spoke guarded- ly to several of Sherman's officers about the erious young man, but they gave ver: ie satisfaction. Finally it was Jearned that he was a famous personator of male aud female characters on the French stage in New York city. It Has a Svengal Square and a Little Billee Street. New that there is a town named Trilby Gown in Florida, with streets named for the characters of Du Maurier’s book, it is fair to assume that for years to come the of that neighborhood will hear nothing, think of nothing but li, Svengali. The founding and the naming of this town are part of a good story. It seems that H. B. Plant, the millionaire, who ewns all the railroads on the western side of Florida, was called on to name the new town which he caused to have built at the crossing of two of his railroads. There had been « station there before the new town was started, and it had been called Macon. When it wa: ded to cut down the grade of the rai t that point the old station house, which was about all there was to the town of Macon, was left standing igh upon the bluff. had to be torn down, as it was of no use in Its lofty alti- tude above the track. When the old build- ing was demolished the death knell of Ma- con, Fla. w inded, and then the ques- tion was asked Mr. Plant, the railroad | president, “What shall we name the new | town? Just at that time the railroad magnate was shed in a second reading of Du ler’s hook, and hen the question was asked he responded: “Let us call the little town site Trilby.” And so it was. Strange the little village at once began to It was put down Trilby on the maps la, and i by of the Tr which was in full frenzy just at that . Real estate agents took hold and helped to build it up, while traveling newspaper men passing over the ra d wrote columns about th town that was growing there to perpet e€ the name of Du Maurier’s book. The town of Trilby is today a pretentious little place with a dozen or more stores, shops and dwellings. The streets are named appro- The principal sa sav and the Lu ral avenues named f the book. WAS A STRATEGIST. Tomy How He Recovered His Drumstick From the Bottom of the Well. From the Ls A little boy dropped his drumstick into a well. In he entreated his parents, the garderer, the footman, the coachman, the cook, the huusematds to go down into well to recover his drumstick. In his lant expedient occurred to he secretly carried off all from the sideboard and threw it Great was the consternation 2 the plate was missed, and an active ch for the ro®bers took place. In the * of the alarm and confusion Master nden Teiezraph. ¥ the Tcmmy ran with the news that he had found the plate. “Where?” was the cry. Down the well,” replied Tommy. “I saw plain shining at the bottom— es. bread baskets, salvers and aid hurried to the well, which, sure enough, the road system in the south, and that did not touch the southeastern part. Twenty years ago the fnanufacture of cotton in the south was pally: infant industry, and cities now know as textile- working centers -were mere trading posts at the cross roads. The fruit and vege- table business of Florida was fe small as to attract little attention, while thé fruit and melon business x Geo did not exist at all. Southern farmers then bought their corn and meats Inatead of raising them as they do now, an e cotton crop of Georgia, notwithstanding thé compara- tively low prices, and notwithstanding the cities have absorbed so much of the rural population, is twice as large as it was then. eee! Rich Indians of Idaho. The Portland Oregonian says that an un- usual condition exists on the the Nez Perce reservation. The Indians are holding about $500,000 of idle money. The failure of banks in which the money belonging to some In- dians was deposited made the simple- minded shy of banks and bankers. On the other hand, the Lewiston bankers have re- fused to receive money on time deposit, with Interest, in accordance with estab- lished custom. These bankers have all the money they can use profitably without taking interest deposits. The circum- stances have caused the Indians to hoard their money at home. They have been Mberal in their expenditures, as a class, but their receipts have been far in excess of their needs. Business men who possess the confidence of the Indians have been tendered the free use of large sums of this money, without interest, and there are In- stances where the capitalists have offered to pay the white men to kcep their money safely. These offers, however, are not made recklessly, although in all cases they may have not been made wisely ———_ ++ When You Show Speed.
