The gratifying results of the sanitary in- spection of the public schools by the healtn beard have encouraged the latter to en- large its sphere of usefulness In the di- rection of the ophthalmological examina- tion of the scholars. The object is to ac- commodate visual defects by properly seat- ing the pupils in the class rooms and by the proper distribution and direction of light in mitigating eye strain. Commts- sioner Fowler very consistently advocates the measure, in which he is seconded oy the president of the health board. There is no doubt of its necessity. Many of the school rooms are improperly lighted, and the pupils are placed without regard to any supposed visual defect and must neces- sarily be denied the usual opportunities for proper education through the various meth- ods of ocular demonstration.
