The m order by Mr. Roger crat, who in a few words explained 1 Ject of the call, which was for the purpose of organizing the private secretaries for the purpose of giving unity in the financial fight that the free silver democrats appar- ently propose making an issue in the next campaign. Upon motion of Mr. Rogers, Mr. Chas. D. Rooney of Massachuse was made temporary chairman, and H. M. Lord, clerk of the committee on ways and means, Was mace temporary secretary. A committee on permaneni organization was then appointed, consisting of Joseph E. Hall of Maine, Edward W. Baker of Massachusetts, Chas. A. Gibson of New York, S. RK. Stratton of Pennsylvania and Thomas M. Rogers of Missouri. This com- mittee will meet daily at 11 a.m. and re- port plan of organization, etc., at the next meeting of the association on Friday of next week. The association will probably be known as the Congressional Clerks’ Sound Money League, and the membership is open to the private secretaries of all senators and rep- resentatives who are in favor of sound money and opposed to the independent free coinage of silver by the United States. pea: sete Underbid the Sugar Trast. The contracts for Indian supplies have been opened in New York, with the result that the Indian bureau will purchase 1,250,- 000 pounds of foreign granulated sugar from G. A. Jahn for $53,125. The interest- ing part of the purchase is that four New York agents and one Chicago agent bid in behalf of the trust. Mr. Jahn, however, knowing the trust price, cut under it, the trust price being 4 41-100 cents and that of Mr. Jahn 4 35-100 cents. As soon as the bids were opened and it Was seen that the contract would go to Mr. Jahn there was a protest on the ground that Mr. Jahn would be obliged to fill the contract with foreign sugar. ‘The appeal to Mr. Jones, commissioner of the Indian bureau, was in vain. Mr. Bliss to be in-New York on Saturday, he indorsed the action of Mr. Jones, there the matter rests. aia:
