A head-end collision between a freight and a passenger train at American Falls, Idaho, yesterday afternoon, caused the death of nine men and the serious injury of eight cthers. Two of the latter will die. The dead are: C. W. Shields, about thir- ty-five, residence unknown; D. L. Thomp- son, Dayton, Wash.; John R. Cooper, Wellsville, Utah; J. Steffen, Dillon, Mont.; five unknown men, all sheep shearers, beating their way. The injured, beside trainmen already mentioned, are: G. W. Brennan, Pearl, Idaho, leg broken; F. D. Springer, Dayton, Wash., leg broken; John Bergan, Brigham, Utah, leg broken; John Peters, residence unknown, leg broken; William Connelly, Great Barrington, Mass., crushed and in- jured internally, will die. The west-bound passenger train was waiting for the freight at American Falls, standing in front of the station building. The freight coming east ran away on the nill west ofthe falis. It is thought the air brakes were tampered with. The freight, running. fifty miles an hour, crashed into the passenger train, which was already backing up in front of the station. Two men were-on the station platform; one was killed and the other fatally injured. The station building was shattered. Both en- gines were converted into scrap iron, and twenty freight cars piled up in a heap. Eight box car , sheep shearers and tramps, were crushed to death. Up to noon five bodies had been taken out. Geo, Moore, the engineer of the freight, is se- riously_ injured. The fireman, Dick Cos- grove, had a leg broken, and C. man, engineer of the passenger, slight injuries. He stayed by his engine until he had reversed it. The conductor and brakeman were on top of the freight cars setting the brakes, and Fireman Cos- grove had climbed back to help, when the crash came.
