The annual piano recital of the pupils of Mr. John Porter Lawrence was given last night at the Luther Memorial Church, a large and enthusiastic audience that con- tained many relatives and friends of the fair performers being present. The pro- gram consisted of twelve numbers, some being better, than others, but as a whole the program was one of the vest of the kind that has been given in this city. The vocal soloist of the evening was Mrs. Chas. Shaler, who took the place of Nellie Wilson Shir-Cliff, and her voice was heard to excellent adyantage. The best work of the evening was in all probability furuished by Miss Grace Hamilton Jones, who played Liszt's Polonaise in E. Mis Jones has at- tracted considerable attention before this time and gives promise of being one of the representative pianists of the cap city. Miss Marie Grice Young fairly divided the honors of the evening, however, with Miss Jones, and won emphatic applause by her int rpretation of Moszkowski's Moment Musi and) Mendelssohn's “Spi ning In the latter nuaiber she disp! “a vechnique that surprised even her most intimate friends, dnd in the former show« d no small amount of mu- and power of expr ion. a ehusky's njoyabte {e) Registered mail closes ‘at 1:00 P. A young wheelman came near losing his life last night on New York avenue at the intersection with 12th street. He tried to cross in front of a cable car and was run down. The fender caught him and his wheel, and carried them a hundred feet be- fore the motorman could stop. Man and wheel were badly tangled, and the wheel- man’s body rested on the very front of tae fender, while the wheel and one of his legs were drawn under. The young fellow jn- doubtedly saved his life by walking his right hand on the pavement, pushing down hard to keep his body from roiling under. A crowd soon collected, but the young man was on his feet before any one could get to him and began to puli his wheel out from under the car. He was a fair-haired, blue-eyed young fellow, and as cool as a breeze. The motorman’ stepped up to him with his pencil and note book and said, “Will you, please give me your name, ‘No by ‘a — sight,” was the 1327 F St N W. don’t propose to be a fool twice. ° ° © |moment he had lifted his wheel over on the pavement, mounted and was off—to Percy S. The outcome of the trouble late yester- day afternoon between Chas. E. Barber, the patent attorney, and Constable Chas. A. Darling over a St. Bernard puppy, which was described in The Star, was not heard today in the Police Court. Both Barber and Darling were charged with disorderly conduct. The former forfeited collateral, while Prosecuting Attorney Pugh nolle prossed the charge against the constable, on the ground that he was in the discharge of his duty when the trouble occurred. Mr. Barber appeared in court and asked for a continuance. It was not granted, and he thereupon left the court, stating that he would not return. Shortly thereafter the case was called and Mr. Barber having failed to make answer, the collateral was declared forfeited. The whereabouts of the BARGAINS IN PIANOS.
