me | ‘THE EVENING STAR, THURSDAY, MAY 13, 1897-14 PAGES. ‘SPANISH FORCE ROUTED. Gen. Garcia Falls on a Spanish Col- re umn Under Gen. ono. ‘A special to the New York Herald from “Havana says: Apparently reliable news of the most important insurgent success in months has just reeched Havana. ' It appears that Gen. Calixto Garcia and General Rabi fell upon a Spanish force which wes carrying food and supplies from -Manzanillo toward Bayamo early last week. ‘They captured the convoy, routed General #Lono’s columns and pursued him so vig- crously that he fled to the coast with a xemnant of his brigade, and took a ship at Cabccorus for Manzanillo. So severe were the losses and so thoroughly disorganized were his men that the Spanish general, it is said, did not dare attempt to retrace his steps to Manzanillo by lend, fearing that he would be again attacked and this time ‘wiped out of existence. The engagement goes to show how help- Jess the Spanish are in the country east of the trocha, which is well called Cuba libre. What ts known of the affair came in a pri- Yate letter to a Spanish officer here. This disaster to the arms of Spain was due primarily to General Weyler’s persist- ent course in attempting to hold Bayamo, which military critics say is without stra- tegic value and not worth a tenth part of the sacrifices already made in attempting to send arms and provisions there from Man- zanillo, only ten leagues away. Spain has Icst 5,000 men and food and arms along the rcad to Bayamo, and now the Spanish sol- diers call it “the road to death.” Gereral Lono laid a trap for the insur- gents. Believing that the convoy would be attacked. he sent his mule train ahead with @ scant escort, intending to flank the rebels or fall upon their rear with his main in- fantry while the escort held their fire. This force ts said to have keen between 1,500 and 2,000 men. General Garcia, with between 600 and 1,000 men, waited for the convoy three leagues from Bayamo. He was told by his scouts that there was a large Spanish force following the poorly protected mule train, and, suspecting a trick. he allowed the pack mules and small escort to pass without Zuolestation at the time. He then placed his zen in en advantageous position to await the coming of General Lono. The Spanish. eagerly awaiting the sound of firing ahead, which would tell them that the train had been attacked, marched Straight into the trap. When the column ‘Was Within short range the insurgents fired. The effect was deadly. The Spanish re- turned the fire, but with little result. sie egeeermet fons Investigating the Cherokee Trouble. Assistant Secretary of the Interior Ryan has begun an inquiry into the trouble over the payment to the Cherokee freedmen, or negroes, in Indian territory, which was xecently suspended after many vexatious delays had been encountered. ——_——_-e—______ AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c.
