Branch Wright Makes am Appeal the Judge Yields. Eloquence had its reward today in the Police Court; words and promises resulted in nothing less than releasing Branch P. Wright on his personal bonds. Of all the regular “vags,” Branch is easily the most tried, true and faithful. Whisky tells the story, and during recent years he has been practically a fixture at the work house. After serving six months, Branch yesterday breathed the pure alr of freedom. Half an hour after bidding In- tendant Stoutenburgh au revoir, but not gcod-bye, the man was discovered by a Policeman ix @ condition usually described as “paralyzed,” on the grass of a public park in South Washington. In order to get him to the precinct station it was necessary to summon the patrol wagon. “Guilty,” said Branch, when arraigned in the Police Court today. “You're looking unusually well, Branch,” remarked the court. “I think it would be ing for you to up all ax time Sedat as 7 “I'm feeling pretty well, than! va replied Branch. “and I'want to wnt ear you'll give me a show this time I'll never teuch another drop.” “Stop right there,” directed Judge Kim- ball. “Did you not write to me twice from the work house during your last term and say if I released you you would not drink again?” ‘Yes, sir.” “And here immediately ce fi you are, found helplessly drunk after your release.” Branch went on to say, “but en wom work this Ti If you let me mn work this m eve! seveenk emer drop.” wera ee erhaps the defendant was the mos: = prised individual in the recm when, rafter a moment's thought, Judge Kimball said: ‘Now, Branch, I've decided to give you one more opportunity. Tl take your per- sonal bonds to appear for sentence on this charge. If you are brought in you'll go to the work house for six months.” “And I won't say a word if that should happen.” promised Branch. “I hope your aon r will give me the full extent of the ‘Step out.” “Thank you, sir.” “He'll be back within a week,” Kimbell, to a Star re left the room. “See if T can’ co said Judge s the man &m correct.” ——__ THE CASE DISMISSED. A Charge Against a Crowd of Boys Not Sustained. A charge of disorderly conduct preferred against Norman ‘Rupp, Harry Zerega, Claude Brannuger, George Brown and Er- nest Dammeen, members of highly respect- able families, was Promptly dismissed after @ hearing today in the Police Court, the ar- rests having been made on complaint of residents along Westminster street, who objected to the assembling of a large crowd on a vacant lot on the south side of the street. Messrs. J. C. Weir, H. M. Schooley and Robert Andrews appeared as complaining s, and their testimony did not vary. st, it seems, a crowd of fully one hundred boys gathered on the lot, where a small bicycle track has been laid out. Several of the party were racing around the track on their wheels, when a colured boy interrupted the speed trial by ge ting in the way with a small wagon. § were exchanged, profanity indulged in, and. for a few minutes, a free fight appeared to be imminent. The gatherings on the lot, it Was stated, constitute a source of serious annoyance to the residents in that locality. “Were these defendants in the crowd?” asked the court. None of the witnesses could identify any of the boys named as having been on the ground. Furthermore, it was testified, that all of them bear excellent reputations and are not of a class likely to cause disorder. Policeman McDonnell, who made the ar- rests, said nothing unfavorable to the de- fendants. “Such gatherings as these are unlawful,” remarked Judge Kimball, “and I want to warn you boys that if you do assemble on that lot and are disorderly, you are liable to arrest. If brought into court, I shall certainly impose stiff fines or send you to the workhouse in default. There has been nothing brought out here on which to hold you in this case, however. Go home.” Ellis Caldwell was notified to appear in court with the other defendants, but did not report until the case had been a posed of. Prosecuting Attorney Pugh al- lowed him to depart, in view of the ruling of Judge Kimball as-to the other boys. —_.>—__. THEY WANT RELIEF. Need Th The South Washington Citizens’ Associa- tion held an enthusiastic meeting at Dom- inick’s Hall, last night, when matters of interest to that section were discussed. ‘The James Creek canal, described as “the only death trap in the city,” came in for a share of attention, and the authorities were scored for permitting it to remain in its present condition. The committee in charge of the movement to secure relief from the nauseous pit is thoroughly in earnest, and — to appeal to Con- i ; i i i I Hi i |
