Big Fire in the Merchants’ Refrigeray ing Company in New York City Last Night. Fire broke out in the large cold storage warchouse of the Merchants’ Refrigerating Company in New York city last night. Fumes of ammonia and the heaviest of smoke struck down firemen almost by the dozen. The call for ambulances was as rapid as the call for engines. A score of doctors and nurses were summoned to do duty in saving the lives of the men risked 80 bravely. One fireman lost his Mfe and fitty more were rendered unconscious. The dead fireman is John Reinhart of engine company No. 7. Those overcome, some of whom are in a serious condition, include members of a dozen companies that were called out as reserves when Chief Bonner found he was losing his men on every hand. The fire was an unusual one and is estimated to have done damage to the extent of at least half a million. The first floor of 161 Chambers street, in the basement of which the fire started, was occupied by Robert Gair as a paper warehouse. As sooneas the firemen got into the cellar they were immediately over- come. Rescuing parties were formed of policemen, citizens and firemen, who car- ried the unconscious men across the street to engine house No. 29, which was for- merly Chambers Street Hospital. The horses quartered there were turned cut and a hospital made of the place again. Geneeral ambulance calls were sent out for ambu- lances. When the ambulances and a corps of extra doctors arrived they found men lying about on all sides unconscious. After the flames had been extinguished the body of an unknown man was found burned almost beyond recognition. No one could account for the man’s presence in the building. The occupants of the building be- lieve that the unknown man set fire to the paint shop and was unable to escape from the flames. D. Howland, treasurer of the Howland mills, the New Bedford Manufacturing Company and the Rotch Spinning Company, was found in the dock at the foot of North street yesterday morn- ing. The place where it was found is not far from that where he was last seen alive. The corporations with which Mr. How- land was connected are now in the hands of receivers as the result of the discovery of unsuspected financial entanglements re- cently discovered by the stockholders. —~ e+ ____ ITS DEBTS COMPROMISED. Three Chicago lawyers are looking up people in Easton, Pa., who, by a compli- cated condition of circumstences, have fallen heirs to an estate in that city value@ at $1,000,000 or more. Forty years ago a woman named Joanna Dickerman of Trenton, N. J., was married to a man named Gottlieb Henninger. The couple moved to Chicago, where Henninger went blind, and was turned out of doors by his wife. He returned to Easton, and later went to Philadelphia, where he died. ‘The woman took up with three aifferent men at various times, and they lived to- gether as man and wife. By the last man, Curtis Robinson, she had two children. Six years ago the woman died, and a year later Robinson died, leaving an estate worth about $1,000,000. The lawyers have succeeded in finding two brothers of the first husband. They live in New Jersey, a few miles from Easton. They will claim part of the estate. America Sends Aid to Grecee.
