Frank Bamford, the young cflicer who was reported to be engaged to Miss Rcmeyn. The charges are based on Bamford’s course in causing the publica- tion of a statement in the Atlanta Consti- tution to the effect that he had never been engaged to Miss Romeyn. This denial Capt. Romeyn denounced as a deliberate lie, and the charges which he has filed against Bamford are based on the alleged untruthfulness of the assertion. The charges have been forwarded, with a list of witnesses. If a court-martial is crdered it wii! likely ave more sensational than the one just closed. Capt. Romeyn has been appointed by the Chilean government to take charg of its exhibit at the Nashville exposition. His daughter, Miss Nina Romeyn, has gone to the exposition, and has taken charge of the exhibit in her fether’s piace. Capt. Remeyn will be retired in three weeks, and will go at once to his new post of duty which awaits him. He was appointed on the recommendation of one of the highest renking officers in the army. — + - +06 —__ DEATH OF ANTONY CAZENOVE. “Member of a Distinguished ‘Virginia Family Passes Away in Baltimore. Antony Caxenove died in Baltimore, Md., yesterday. He was forty-eight years old, and was the son of the late Wm. Gardner Cazencve, a Gistinguished citizen of Alex- endria, Va., and Mary Stanard Cazenove, a daughter of Judge Stanard of the Vir- ginia court of appeals, a celebrated jurist in the first half of the century. Mr. Caze- nove’s grandfather was Antony Charles Cazercve, who escaped from France dur- ing the French revolution of 1792 and came to this country, settling in Alexandria, where he founded a large commercial house and became one of the noted finan- ciers of the day, being one of the founders of the first bank of the United States. i i af ee 18 LIONS’ DEN IN MIS CELLAR. Novel Experience of a California Razchman im the Back Hills. The cellar of @ house inhabited by human beings is a strange place for wild beasts to make their home, but it has happened far back in the hills near Sunol, Alameda coun- ty, Cal., where Antonio Nunez, a farmer, lives with his family. Antonto is a thrifty 4nd industrious man, and has prospered. Two weeks ago he moved from his old home into another house that had not yet been oc- cupied. For several days after Antonio and his family moved into their new home they heard strange sounds coming apparently from the cellar. As Antonio was busy with his farm work and those at the house were engaged in setting things to rights, no effort was made to ascertain the cause of the sounds. But when day after day passed and the noise from the cellar did not ce: termined to make an invest courageous, Antonio is discreet. and he called in a few friends to his assistance. Armed with shotguns, they made their way into the cellar. They had hardly reached the side of the stone-walled place when from the place beneath the stair- way bounded a splendid speciment of a California lioness. Before a shot could be need the animal escaped through the open oor. A second later and the lion, a big, ugly beast, made a jump for the stairway; but this time Antonio was ready, and killed the animal at the first fire. While his friends stood guard at the doorway, Antonio made a search under- neath the stairway, and found four cubs. They were as comfortable as kittens, hi ing an overcoat and a quilt for a bed. Nu- nez took the biting and scratching cubs upstairs, and for the rest of the day and far into the night waited for the lioness to return, but the brute did not come back. Nunez is going to try to raise the cubs. a lion measured six feet from tip to tip. Conference, Ex-Vice President Adiai Stevenson will £ail from New York for Havre next Satur- day on the steamer Touraine in company with Messrs. Wolcott and Paine, the other members of the bimetallic commission. He left Bloomington yesterday.accompanied by Mrs. Stevenson and his daughter Letitia. Mrs. Stevenson will stop in Washington a few days and then return home. Mrs. Ste- venson will accompany her father to Eu- rope and will remain abroad until his re- turn. Mr. Stevenson, in an interview, said that the commission will first visit Paris and later the other capitals of Europe, prob ebly London first and Beriin next. “We will be guided to a great extent by our instructions from Washington,” said he. “Our object is to secure consent of all the European nations, or as many of them as possible, to the holding of a conference of natiors in regard to an international agreement as to the coinage and ratio of goid and silver.” eS ae: PLANNING A CLOCK GARDEN, Blooming Flowers Will Mark the |} ‘Mime at California University. A clock garden, whose flowers will tell the Ume of day, is being planned by Instructor H. A. Outsterhout of the botanical division of the Stanford University. He proposes ta cultivate such a garden on the university grounds, arranging the plants in dial form. The hours and half hours are to be indi- cated daily by the successive opening and closing of buds. The work of producing a clock garden will be a long task, as it has never been attempted in California before, and a great deai of experimenting will be necessary to find out just what flowers should be put around the circle to indicate time. The garden will be the only one of the kind in the United States. “By getting the right varieties of flowers we can mark all the hours and some of the halt hours throughout the day,” said Mr. Ouisterhout in describing the projected botanical curiosity. “The flow: will be arranged like a clock dial and in the early morning they will begin to bloom, the dif- ferent verieties at different periods, ac- ccrding to the light and heat. Gradually the opening f flowers will extend around the circle, antil at night the circle will be all in bloom.” + e+ —___ ACTOR THORNE DEAD. He Was a Brother of Mra. The Secretary of State has instructed the American ambassador at Berlin to demand the immediate release of Samuel Mayer, who has been arrested in Germany for al- leged violation of the laws regulating mili- tary service. Mayer was born in this country. His father was a German subject, who had failed to take out naturalization papers. When twelve years of age, Mayer returned to Germany with his father, attended school, and when he reached the age of twenty-one years he was ordered to join the army. Mayer protested that be was an American citizen and consequently exempt from service in the German army. He ap- pealed his case to the American ambassa- dor, and the matter was referred to the au- thorities at Washington. The Secretary of State coasidered his claim to be well found- ed, and instructed the ambassador to so in form the German authorities. He is sal to take the general ground that persons vorn in American territory are American citizens, and as such are entitled to the pro- tection of the government under all circum- stances. ———____-e.
