When District Attorney Davis assumed the duties of his office two months ago he found the criminal docket very much crowded, and now that he has, by the ap- peintment of Mr. D. W. Baker, completed the office force, he will at once start in to clear the docket up as much as possible before tne adjournment of the courts for the summer. Mr. Davis stated to a Star reporter to- day that he had yesterday afternoon for the first time seen the opinion of the United ; States Supreme Court in the case of Mr. Elverton R. Chapman, the convicted sugar trust contumacious witnezs, and in a day cr two he expected he would ask for the enforcement of Mr. Chapman’s sentence. Mr. Chapman's case, explained Mr. Davis, has been regarded from the first as a test one, and for that reason, if for no other, there should be no unseemly haste in ask- ing for the enforcement of the sentence. Then, too, said Mr. Davis, Mr. Chapman is not a criminal. In a few days, stated the district attorney, he will probably ask for the enforcement of the sentence, a fine of $100 and thirty days’ imprisonment in jail. Referring to the forty or more undis- posed of oleomargarine indictments, Mr. Davis said that he will within the next few days place Assistant District Attcrneys Taggart and Snillington in complete charge of them, with instructions to push the cases to trial at the very earliest day prac- 10) doz. Nearly all the Lutheran ministers of Washington have gone to Baltimore to at- the annual meeting of the eastern conference of the Maryland Lutheran synod, which began there this morning in the Church of the Reformation. The program comprises: Addresses by Revs. L. M. Kuhns and G. H. Slaybaugh on “The Pastor's Relation to His Member- ship in Congregation and as a Minister Not Pastor;” by Rev. In that case, as in the oleo cases, Mr. Davis is incompetent to appear because of his former connection with them as counsel for the defense. The case of ex-Policeman “Dan” Wil- liams, charged with the embezzlement of Police Court funds, stated Mr. Davis, has been laid before the grand jury, and the man will be prosecuted to the fullest ex- tent of the law as soon as indicted, which, Mr. Davis expects, will be in a few days. It is nct true, said Mr. Davis, that he has decided to pigeon-hole the indictment against Bessie Stacey, the young woman who is charged with robbing Messrs. Har- ris & Shafer of jewelry last winter. He has not consented to an abandonment o1 the case, Mr. Davis said, and in due time the young woman will be called to answer the charge. The Finest Lumber, $1.00 Per 100 Ft. The same story ap- plies to Elizabeth as has been told of the majority of white women who face the Police justice as vagrants. She was at one time fair and refined, a loved member of a family of standing in the community. All that was years ago. It was wine, Principally, that caused the downfall, so say those who have known her for years, and it was most complete. “I found this woman lying prostrate on the steps of a house on the street near L street last night,” stated Policeman Copeland. “She was in an advanced state of intoxication. As she has been that way many times before I concluded that it was proper to bring her into court as a vagrant.” “Indeed, judge, I was not drunk,” de- clared Elizabeth, in good English. “The officer is certainly mistaken. I am a good woman and am employed as cook at a Christian home. I am engaged in Chris- tian and temperance work.” “I saw. the defendant early last even- “volunteered Policeman Lightfoot. Barnum & Balley will this season present an entirely new show—a modern, magnifi- cent and colossal institution. The circus this year is much larger and better than all previous ones. It now contains, besides three rings, three stages and a race track, a veritable midway, lined on one side with the living human curiosities, such as the big giantess, the midget man welghing but six and a half pounds, the ica, and Deodica, inseparable twins, and a greater wonder than the Siamese twins; on the other all the high-class specialty artis: whose .vaudeville entertainment of itself is a whole show. Here are male and female magicians, jugglers and curfous musicians, besides the fire king, lightning calculator, child oracle and others, for which ‘there is no extra charge whatever. Behind and around these again are all the animals in cages, and at one end of the walk a big cage, containing the gorilla, Johanna, a wonderful, human-like creature, the like of which was never seen before. The performances are of the grandest possible character, embodying every kind of arenic entertainment. Sixteen champion bareback riders of both sexes wiil undoubt- edly prove a revelation in equestrian feats, while scores and scores of the best aerial- ists of Europe and America will display their accomplishments in mid air. All na- tionalities will strive with our native horse- men in the equestrian tournament, May- pole dance, and with high-leaping and long- aistance jumping horses, while scores more of athletes and acrobats will contest in leaping and tumbling tournaments. Seven- ty trained horses perform in one ring at one time and twenty-four elephants in three rings at another period. Giant and pigmy animals, and curious animal freaks, will also prove interesting objects to our rural friends, and the children will be delighted with the extent of the eye-feasts provided for them in the antics of the clowns and the capers of the tiny trained animals, birds and other creatures. The new street parade, too, will prove a source of pleasure and instruction to the little folks, as it contains a wonderful forty-horse team, reproduction of the re- turn of Columbus to Barcelona, end other interesting features. All these things will be here tomorrow and Thursday at North Capitol and M streets. —_>__ $1.25 To Baltimore and Re- $1.25 turn via Pennsylvania Railroad. The matter of the extra charge on the part of the express and telegraph com- panies for delivering on the heights was al- so taken up.
