RAILROAD REORGANIZATIONS Ss Reports are in circulation that an import- ant and very close alliance has been formed between the Baltimore and Ohio and Sea- board Air Line railroad companies, and rumors are again rife of the extension of =a Seaboard Air Line from Ridgeway, N. .. to Richmond, Va. It-is stated that the ws and Western is friendly to the Seaboard and will render material aid by extending the Roanoke Southern from Winston, N. C., to Monroe, on the Seaboard Air Line. It fs stated that a company has been organized to bulld this extension. By this route the Norfolk and Western would gain an entrance into Atlanta, and the Sea- board a western outlet via the Norfolk and Western. Seaboard officials deny that they arp behind the Richmond extension project. It is also stated that the Baltimore and Ohio is interested in the Seaboard’s exten- sion to Washington, and will aid the enter- prise later on. To effect this about fifty miles of road will have to be built, and a bridge across the Potomac at Washington. The Summit Branch. The committee of security holders of the Summit Branch Railroad Company, which is controlled by the Pennsylvania, appoint- ed some time ago to investigate the prop- erty and to prepare an equitable plan of reorganization has made its report. The committee favors foreclosure of the proper- ty for the amount of the principal and in- terest of the mortgage debt and existing judgments. The new company is to issue @ first and only mortgage not exceeding $1,400,000 of 5 per cent thirty-year gold bonds, with a sinking fund of 3 per cent on net earnings, and to issue one new bond in place of every existing first mortgage bond surrendered to the committee with its un- Faid coupoa, thus leaving $325,000 in the treasury for future use. It is also proposed to issue one new full-paid share of capital stock of $30 fcr every three shares of present stock upon the payment of a con- tribution equivalent to $3 per share on ex- isting stock. The liabilities of the company consist of $1,075,000 of 7 per cent bonds and judg- ments amounting to $121,04. There are also claims amounting to $30,000 which may have to be extinguished under the mortgage. The assets of the company con- sist of 11,488 acres of land, of which 8,461 acres lie within the coal measures. The business tabulation shows that during the ten years the average net earnings were about 5 per cent on the present funded debt. Mittorte, rom ‘Tacoma, close bere daily’ up 10 6:30 FSC April 24. Piance of good mediam grade makes trom $250.00 Raleigh and Gastun Line. It is understood that the refunding scheme of the Raleigh and Gaston Rail- rcad Company, which is a part of the Sea- board Air Line, will have to be remodeled in order to conform with the charter of the company. The company has $1,000,000 8 per cent bonds maturing January 1, 1898. Some time ago a scheme was proposed which provided for the issue of $1,500,000 5 per cent bonds to take up these 8 per cent bonds, and hold- ers of the 8's were to be given dollar for collar in the new 5 per cent bonds at the date of maturity. It was also proposed to sell part of $500,000 bonds for the general purposes of the company. It now appears that by the company’s charter,~ which is a North Carolina cor- poration, it is specifically provided that the company cannot issue more than $1,000,000 bonds, which will thus necessitate the modifying of the refundidg scheme. The astonishing statement is made, but borne out by facts, that the difference of one mill per ton per mile on freight car- Tied by all rafiroads im the United States makes a difference in the revenues of $80- 000,000. It is the careful watcting of the tenth part of a cent that brings profit to the transportation companies, and it is Lo wonder that the holders of railway stocks are anxious for some legislation which will enable them to receive some ret their investment. mc New Dispatch Line. SS IN NEW AND LARGER QUARTERS. Messrs. M. Dyrenfor Great Clothing Es mes There was added last evening another reat business establishment to the many of which ihe city may justly be proud, that of Messrs. M. Dyrenforth & Co., who { many years have conducted a first-class clothing house, out of which this new and larger establishment has grown. Several weeks ago the firm found the capacity of thetr old establishment entirely too small to accommodate their patrons, and they de- cided to move to much more commod quarters. The four-story building at Pennsylvania avenue was secured, and no expense was omitted in fitting it up. When last evening it was thrown open to the public it was unanimously voted to be one of the handsomest establishments of the kind in the country. The building was ablaze with electric lights, flowers and lants were there in the greatest profu- sion, and the Marine Band, under the i- rection of Prof. Fanciulli, rendered choice selections during the evening. The opening was in the nature of a reception, and from 7 until 10:30 o’elock thousands thronged the Breat store, admiring its magnificence, in- specting the immense new stock and con- gratulating the members of the firm. The members of the firm were the delighted r cipients of many handsome remembrances from their patrons and friends, the floral tokens being particularly beautiful. TESST Eile REV. R. S.
