ATLANTIC CITY, N, J., Mareh 2%, 1897. The atrival of Abner McKinley, brother of President McKiniey, on Monday stirred up interest among the hotel colony. It was expected that the Presiden: would accom- pany him, but duties at the White House made him defer his proposed sojocrn here. Mr. McKinley wus accompanied by hits wife and daughter. Miss Mabel, and the lattor's maid. They arrived Monday evening, and were at once driven to the Hotel Dennis, where a handsome suite of rooms had been prepared for them. The balmy spring weather that has pre- vailed here during the week has thronsed the board walk daily and caused a beauty show of pretty faces and spring styles sel- om seen befor> Easter Monday. The wealth and society of the country have been represeated among the daily prom- enaders. The many improvements belay made here are ia, te Assume a finished a) pearance. The city park at Indiana avenue prom- ises to prove an interesting and attractive spot, with its beautiful flower beds, pretty green lawns and gravel walks, in the center of which a fountain will play. The Atlantic City Yachtsmen’s Associa- tion has started to make repairs to its wharf and the inlet preparatory to the opening of the yachting season. ‘The switchback railway waa open this week. All the stores and booths along the es- planade are open with the exception of the bathing houses, some of which are now undergoing alterations that will great- ly improve their appearance. A Prosperous Seanon. There are more visitors here at the pres- ent time than during any previous Lenten period in the history of this popular re- sort. A large number of them are from Washington and the south. The hotel proprietors and business men are happy, and predict that Atlantic City will experi- ence the biggest season she has ever known. Even now many of the leading hotels are full and the smaller hostelries are rapidly filling up. Rev. Dr. H. Berkowitz, chancellor of the Jewish Chautauqua Society of the United States, has completed arrangements for the summer assembly of the national society to be held in the Beth Israel Synagogue here for a week in July and one week in August This will attract visitors from all parts of the country. Preparations are being made for a num- ber of social affairs at the close of the penitential period. During the past week progressive euchre and whist tourneys have been the popular diversion at many a the hotels. A number of the Washing- ton visitors took part in a progressive euchre at the Seaside House on Monday evening, and at the Albemarle the follow- ing evening, and succeeded in carrying off som+ of the handsome prizes offered.
