What is Occurring Across Rock Creek Bridge Told in Brief Paragraphs. ‘There was a very pretty birthday party last evening at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. August Voss, on 2vth street, between N street and Dumbarton avenue, the occa- sion being the tenth anniversary of Miss Alta Plowden of Ocean Hall, St. Mary's county, Md. A large crowd of young peo- ple assembled, and spent a very pleasant evening. Games of ali sorts were played, an exhibition of fancy dancing given by Miss Eva Ogle and others, musical selec- tions by Miss Ella Davidson, and last, but not least, the serving of an abundance of refreshments, which the children enjoyed immensely. The little hostess was the re- cipient of many well wishes. Among those present were Misses Eva Ogle, Helen Tay- lor, Marie Buell, Estelle Buell, Malette Roach, Nina Lamar, Bertie King, Lillian Lamar, Marjory Irwin, Regia Lamar, Mabel King, Helen Dix, Rickie Johansen, Mamie Johansen, Nellie Hudson, Edna Lee and Ella Davidson, Masters Roscoe Roach, W. E. Roach, Frank Sherwood, E. T. Hughes, Julian Worthington, Lyman King, William King and Frank Johansen. One of the most happy spectators of the evening was Mrs. Eliza Voss, the mother of Mr. Voss, who hag only recently passed her ninety- fourth birthday. Painful Accident. Mrs. Victoria Nourse, the wife of Capt. John Nourse of the canal boat A. H. Brad, met with a painful accident yesterday af- ternoon on the canal, near 33d street. The mother was walking across the hatches of the boat with her eight-montis-old child in her arms, when the hatchway broke, pre- cipitating the two to the hold of the boat, probably six feet below. Both were picke up unconscious and the Emergency Hos pital ambulance summoned. An examina- tion of the injuries snowed that the mother was not so badly hurt, but the baby was suffering with an attack of concussion of the brain, which, it is feared, will result fatally. Real Estate. Charles D. Church has bought of Sara E. Beach lot 298, of square 1266, located on P street between 27th and 28th streets, an unramed consideration. Charles R. Newman has sold to John Ridout parts of lots 10 and 11, Old George- town, and lot 7 and part of lot 6, of square 1208, Corcoran’s subdivision. The price paid is not given. The president and directors of George- town University have transferred to Gren- ville M. Weeks the west one-half of origi- nal lot 2, square 724, to conform with the land records of the District. Baverly Prior has sold to Mary Smith for an undivided one-half interest in lot of square 1237. Death of Mrs. Burch. Mrs. Martha A. Burch died Monday morning, after an illness of some days, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Rosa A. Pern, at 3067 Canal street. The de- ceased had reached the age of seventy-six, and enjoyed a good circle of acquaintances. Her funeral will be held tomorrow morn- ing at 8 o'clock from Trinity Catholic Church, where a solemn mass of requiem will be chented for the repose of her soul. ———— It matters little what it is that you want whether a situation or a servant—a want” ad. in The Star will reach the person who can fill your need. -—-—— MOSBY'S MEN. at An Appeal to Partici; le in the Grant Monument Dedication. An zppeal has been issued by John Dick- kon, temporary committeeman, headquar- ters Confederate Veteran Camp of New York, to the ex-members of Mosby cav- alry, otherwise known as the 43d Virginia battalion, to participate in the ceremonies attendant upon the dedication of the Grant monument on April 27, 1897. Mr, Dickson says: “No greater opportunity has been offered for the expression of the grateful sentiment and appreciation of the magnanimity of Grant toward our comrades in gen- and more particularly the remem- eral, brance of his generous protection to our commander, Col. Juhn S. Mosby, close of the late war. “It is to be hoped that we can gather t gether a goodly number to swell the rani of the ‘ex-confederate’ organizations in the grand parade. Those members desiring to participate are requested te forward their names at once, in order that ar- rangenents may be made for horses, equip- ments, etc.”” Mr. Dickson's effort in this direction is ably seconded by the local Confederate Veterans’ Association, which has taken up the appeal and is doing all in its power to have a large representation of the vetera) in line from the District of Columbia. A brief meeting of the center council of the Civic Center was held yesterday after- noon at the Congregational Church, Dr. Geo. E. Kober presided. Mrs. Ella B. Fos- ter, chairman of the committee on public education, reported the result of the con- ference of her” committee with several United States senators In regard to esiab- lishing Kindergarten departments in the public schools as not at all satisfactory, as they were not given time to put the sub- ject In detail before the senators. The committee has completed arrangements for the inspection of the sanitary condition of the public school buildings in the city and county. Miss Hosmer read an invitation from the National Municipal League to attend the annual mecting at Louisville next August. It was resolved that any members of the Civic Center who desired to attend should be duly accredited CAPITAL RAILWAY. Delays in Completing the Arrange- ments for Operation. The promoters of the Capital Railway Company are working hard to comply with t act of Congress chartering the road, which stipulates that the same shall be completed by May 28, 1897. Several unex- pected delays have operated to postpone matters, but the incorporators are using every possible means to adjust the difficul- ties and have everything in readiness at the time specified. Just at this time they are directing their attacks upon the Commissioners, and are urging the approval of the Brown system of underground trolley. Capt. Beach has been to Johnstown, Pa., investigating the system and his report is satisfactory. At a meeting of the board of Commissioners yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock the sub- ject came up for consideration, and took a wide divergence before anything was ac- complished, The Commissioners desired the consideration of the motive power to take precedence, but an altercation arose between the representatives of the Ana- costia road and the incorporators of the Capital Company, and little was accom- plished. The following protest was filed: “We, merchants and residents of 1ith street southeast between M street and the bridge, protest against the granting of a permit to install the ball, button or plate system of electricity, involving projections ve the pavement on said street. This street has more travel than any of South- east Washington, and to it an ex- perimental system, and one’ it would not be allowed on any and every other im- portant street, would be a discrimination and an ‘€, unwarranted, ent oot not contemplated in sentations were made that the best spain | known would be adopted.” High-priced competitors disregard a well-estab- lished law of physics when they buck against Sal- vation O81, It ts the best and cheapest. 25c.
