GOL DENBE Opening Bids for Repairs of Aqueduct Bridge. Undecided Euchre Club and Other Local Notes of General and Especial Inter The opening of the bids for the rebuilding of pier No. 4 of the Aqueduct bridge a day ago at the War Department ts regarded as an indication that the work will be com- pleted as soon as possible. The bridge is in a rather unsafe condition at present, and shakes perceptibly beneath the welght of passing vehicles, especially around the damaged pier. The cofferdam which sur- rounds the pier has been in position for several years, and fs now in a rather dilapi- dated condition. It has withstood the floods of two years in the Potomec, and while not washed away, has been weakened con- siderably. The flood of this year deposited trees and heavy logs and great quantities of dirt and rubbish within the inclosure, which will take some time to clear out. The lowest bid for the work of improving the pier, which includes the repair of the cofferdam d its removal after the work on the pier, has been made by Albert ¥ mot Baltimore, whose figure was given Wet at 10 while the highest bid was nearly 000, In connection with the work ‘of rebuild- ing the pie~, the matter of permitting rail- roads to cross the bridge is being again agitated. bill introduced In the Senate yesterday by Senator McMillan provides for the use of the structure for street rail- roads, by making the roadway larger and Permitting the Mount Vernon and the Falls Church roads to cross and make connec- the new union depot on this side.
