Efforts to Rid a West Virginia Vil- we of Undesirable Persons. Intelligence has come of a terrible calam- ity which occurred Saturday night in the interior of Tyler county, W. Va., by waich a number of persons were terribly injured and several lost their lives. In one of the interior oil fields there has been a speak-easy and a sporting Mouse, whick incurred the ill will of the people living in that section, and according to the story a number of attempts have been mide to eradicate the places, but in vain. Saturday night a number of the male pop- ulation of the little village went to the two houses, which are located side by side, and after warning the inmates, applied a torck to the structures. The people of the houses had made no effort to leave, and consequently, when the fire started, thcy were not prepared to get out as quickly as was necessary. One or two girls are re- ported to have been burned in the house and two men are said to have lost their lives in the speak-easy. In addition to this, it is known that a number of per- sons were terribly burned, some of them so badly that it is not believed that they can recover. The names of those who are reported to have been burned to death in the fire are: Stella Woods of Pittsburg, Anna Johnson of Columbus, John Jackson of Pennsylva- nia, Frank Stewart of Indiana. The men were both workers in the oil fields, and at the time of the fire were sleeping in their rooms over the speak- easy. The nacnes af the parties who were sertously burned by the flames in their en- deavor to escape from the ‘buildings can- not be learned, butit is known that there were five or six of them. | — oon.
