Cotillion Danced After a Midnight Supper — Personal Notes— Coming Events. The Washington Assembly last night at the Arlington was a brilliant event. Par- ticipated in by several hundred persons whose movements are always of interest in social life, it became thereby doubly in- teresting to many others, who have grown to regard this, the largest ball of the win- ter, as the best occasion of all of seeing the fashionable world of the capital fully represented. The floral adornments of the parlor suite and the bail room and supper oom, as well as the approaches thereto, were dreams of beauty. The finest blos- soms and the most artistic arrangement made each spot a bower of beautiful fragrance. Southern smilax made an arbor of the ball room. The mirrors, framed in more delicate greens, had beneath them parterres of flowers. The music gallery was hidden with palms and foliage plants, and below it on screens and flower-bordered mirrors were ranged the cotillion favors of roses. In each of the parlors either Ameri- can beauty roses or orchids were arranged in most artistic profusion and beauty. The hostess of the evening was Mrs. Har- riet Lane Johnston, who received in the middle parlor. Her gown was an elegant one of black velvet, with the front of white brocaded satin. She wore most magnificent Jewels. After supper, which was served at midnight, from ftower-adorned tables in the large dining room, a cotillion was danced, led by Lieutenant Buckingham. The gov- ernors of the ball were Mr. John Davis, president; Col. John Hay Mr. Walter V. Boardman, Mr. Calderon Carlisle, Mr. Chas. C. Glover, ar: Arnold Hague, Mr. George Hellen, Mr. N. F. Knagenhjelm, Mr. Henry May, Mr. Eaward McCauley, Mr. John Poor, treasurer; Mr. W. W. Rockhill, Mr. Joseph Sanger, secretary, and Mr. F. Rufus Tyron. Every phase of fashionable life, the diplo- matic, resident and oficial circles, was rep- resented among the throngs of guesis. Mr. and Mrs. Charles W.
