Yet it seemed that the association was likely to be rent asunder before it would honor such a man. He urged the associa- tien to come together, forget their differ- ences and adopt the resolution, and prevent the newspapers from making a spectacle of them. White Winged Peace. Mr. Ballinger spoke very earnestly, and when he concluded Mr. McCalmont frankly stated that h2 had been converted by the chair’s remarks, and felt he had labored under a mistaken idea as to the nature of the resolution, expressing himself as being anxious to go as far as any one in honor- ing Senator Sherman. Mr. Bundy, how- ever, remarked that he had not been con- verted by the chair’s remacks, and said that he could eee no difference between adopting the resolutions respecting Com- missioners Ross and Powell and that re- ferring to Senator Sherman, whom he highly admires, both as a man d official. He was unable to see why suca a distinc- tion should be made. If the association could not express an opinion as to the ad- ministrations of the Discrict Commission- ers, then, in God's name, what could they do? Why should the distinction be made? Because John Sherman is a greater man than John Ross? Or because John Sherman holds a higher official position than Jorn Ross? The fact that Senator Sherman is an honorary member of the association and Commissioner Ross is not is an acciJent which should not prejujice Mr. Ross. While Mr. Bundy was speaking Mr.O'Don- oghue and Mr. McCalmont got together, with the result that Mr. O'Donoghue ex- plained that he would withdraw the origi- nal motion and offer one which met the ap- proval of Mr. McCalmont. The resolution was as follows: f | Resolved, That we hil with the ost satisfaction the noiice of the appointmeni of Senator John Sherman, an honorary member of our association, to the porition of Secretary of State; especially on xecevnt of his interest in the improvements of this city, and more especially cf Colurbia Heights, and that we wish him healih and success in the guidance of this great na- ion: s ‘Mr. Bundy grav2ly moved to amend hy adding the name of Wm.
