New Telephone System—Local Notes of General Interest in the Locality. Evening Star Bureau, No. 121 North Washington street, Alexandria, Va., January 14, 1807. As stated exclusively in The Star of yes- terday a policy war, which, it is hoped, will Prove to be a “fight to a finish,” instead of a limited round contest, as\has heretofore been the case, was begun in the police court yesterday morning, when Edward Shock, a well-known young man, was fined for Writing and promoting policy. This was the first in what it is thought will be a long series of arrests. In fact, it is reported that every “dive” where this pernicious style of gambling is conducted will be wiped out, and forever. While no positive infor- mation could be gotten as to who gave the informatior by which Shock was “pulled,” it is pretty well agreed that it was at the instance of Sergeant Smith of the police force, who is earnest in his intention to do his whoie duty in the matter. Sergeant Smith is an efficient and popular officer, 60 far as honest, law-abiding people are con- cerned, but is bitterly hated by those of the | lawbreaking fraternity. The Star reporter has been told that Shock, who was fined | yesterday, said that he had as much right to run a policy game as the “big. guns, and if he was pulled by the police he going to “make it warm” for somebody. Developments are awaited with interest. ‘The Alexandria papers and the other Wash- ington papers coming to this city were con- spicuous for the absence of any news con- cerning this policy war. While Sergeant Smith is said to have inaugurated this business it is belleved that he will have the hearty co-operation of his superior officers and the other members of the force. Lieut. Smith said this merning that it is his intention to swear out warrants at once against every policy player in this city, and use every means at his command to suppress this vice. There is great jealousy between the va- rious members of the police force in the matter of making arrests and investiga- tions, and in this way it is believed that matters will be brought to a startling cli- max, so far as lawbreakers are concerned. New Telephone Syste! The Bell Telephone Company will, it is said by Manager Wythe White, commence at once to put in a new and improved sys- tem of telephones and connections in this city, which will greatly facilitate conversa- tion between this city and the other big cities. The improvements will cost $10.0 and will be completed as soon as possibl The service of the Bell company in this city has already reached a high state of perfection, Will Reopen Montgomery Case. Mayor Thompson will, by request, reopen the case of John Montgomery, the Southern railway porter, charged with stealing coal from the bins of the company. an account of which appeared in yesterday's Star. Montgomery still asserts his innocence, and ys that at the trial, which will be held at 7 o'clock this evening, he will be able to prove his claims. Directors Elected. The fcliowing board of directors were elected yesterday at a meeting of the ital Trust Company, which was held at + office of Mr. J. R. Caton: James Frase: W. H. Crosby, A. S. Caywood, John > ! Kidwell, second lNeutenant; W. Shafer, recorder; J. C. Moore, treasurer. This di- vision will be inspected February 9, when a pleasant entertainmen: will be had. A Clean Slate. The police records for the past twenty- four hours show a clean slate, no arrests having been made by the police during !that period. There were only three lodg- ers at the police station last night. The initiation was conducted throughout with marked impressiveness and ritualistic fidelity, without the book. Among the lodges repre- sented by visitors were the following: Ri: ing Sun of Virginia, Star of Hope, Liberty, Friendship, Rescue and Columbia. Enter- taining remarks were made by the Misses Taylor and Daniel, superintendents; Messrs. Ford, Davies, J. G. Smith, Canfield, Stew- art and Russell. A resolution was adopted protesting against the issuance af licenses by the excise board for saloons located in places where—to quell disturbances—in- creased police force would be required. =e eee Joan of Are. Mr. F, E. D. Brady, a well-known mem- ber of the District bar, will deliver an il- lustrated lecture on the strange life and warlike deeds of Joan of Arc before the Carroll Institute this evening. Mr. Brady is an easy and graceful platform speaker, and, as he has made an exhaustive study of the romantic career of the Maid of Or- leans, he will furnish an interesting resume of this weird episode in the annals of France. The lecture will be profusely illustrated with stereopticon pictures, under the manipulation of Mr. Wm. L. Saleau. ee ages Jrish Element in America.
