At the celebrated election in 1865,a€ which Mr. Gladstone lost his seat from the uni- versity, his opponent was Mr. Hardy. The practice then (and, for aught I know to the contrary, {t may be so still at a con- tested election) was for each elector to re- cord his vote by word of mouth before tellers for each party sitting in the convo- cation house or some other suitable place of meeting. The late Prof. Henry Smith was acting as teller for Mr. Gladstone, when an urcouth country parson entered, and to the usual question for whom he wisted to record his vote replied in his confusion, “I vote for Mr. Glad—, I mean for *Ardy.” “I claim that vote,” quietly put in Prof. Henry Smith. “No, no,” pro- tested the old clergyman, “I didn’t finish ame.” “You didn’t even begin the ” was the professor's dry retort. A story is told of an eminent legal prac- titloner who was afflicted with a similar difficulty in pronouncing his aspirates, many yeers ago. He had a particular dis- like to a late learned lord chancellor, who had published a beok upon hymns. Upor seeing his rival enter the court on one oc- casion he was overboard to mutter *e comes, 'umming ‘is "ymn tunes; ‘umbug, “ow I do ‘ate 'im!” Pretty When She Didn't Sin From the Chicago Tribune. She was visiting the city, and she was the prettiest girl in the room. When she stood up to sing the other girls regarded her enviously. A pretty girl who can sing is doubly dangerous, and they considered that the visitor had already recetved more than her proper share of masculine atten- tion. While she was arranging her music and whispering to the accompanist, the two girls just behind the piano were exchang- ing contidences. “I do think it's a sha said the first girl, vexedly. “She's captured all the men already with her airs and graces, and if she sings well—and I just know she does— we won't have a bit of fun tonight.” “Oh, yes we will,” answered the second girl, smiling happily. “We'll be all right. But the other one was not to be so easily consoled. “I wonder who askel her to sing? she fretted. “It must have been some one whu knows all about her little tricks, too, for all the girls in the club are talking about it? said the second girl, calm- ly. “You'll know why in a minute. Just wait a bit.” ‘Two minutes later the first girl leaned over the other and touched her arm. “Why, she makes awful faces,” she whis- -pered, delightedly. “She's positively ugly when she opens her mouth that way.” “I know it,” responded the second girl, with a satisfied smile. “That's wuy I asked her to sing.” “You clever darling!” exclaimed the first girl; and only the fact that there were others present kept them from hugging ach other as they urged the visitor to sg again. ——_—_+e+—___ A Result of Discipline. From Harper's Round Table, Frederick the Great of Prussia used to tell a laughable story of an experience of his own. During one of his campaigns in Silesia, he made it his habit to stroll through his camp in disguise at night, to come more in touch with his soldiers. One night he was stopped by a sentry, but, giv- ing the proper password, was permitted to proceed. Instead of doing so, however, he endeavored to tempt the sentry into accepi- ing a cigar, saying that a smoke would seiace his long watch. “It is against the rules,’ sald the soldier. “But you have my permission,” said Frederick. our permission! ‘And who are you? I am the king. ‘The king be hanged!” said the incor- ruptible sentry. “What would my captain cried the soldier.
