14 THE ZVENING STAR, TUESDAY, .DECEMBER 15, 1896-16 PAGES, BUDDING AMERICANS. How Little Russian Immigrants Showed Their Patriotism. Five hundred Russian immigrant chil- dren, who are being educated under the Baron de Hirsch fund at the Educational Alliance building on East Broadway, New York, took part in a competition Friday morning for the prize offered by the Pat- ria Club to the school children of New York city for the best “salute to the flag” and the best original patriotic song, The auditorium where the exercises were held was festooned with national colors, and above the platform upon which the officers of the soclety, the committee of the Patria FORMALLY STARTED Naval ihieacis Battalion Organized and Officered Last Night. —— eee BILLS INTRODUCED IN CONGRESS ——— Additions to the List of Lieuten- Club and the visitors were seated large ants Made. American flags were draped. ees According to the New York Sun there are 556 names on the society's register, and TWO CREWS FORMED | there were only six absentees when, at 11 o'clock Friday forenoon, the children marched into the hall to the music of “Dixie,” each child wearing an American flag upon his cr her breast. Many of the girls wore the national colors in their hair. Mr. A. S. Solomons, formerly of Washing- ton, who is the general agent of the so- ciety, satd that the exercises derived spe- cial interest from the fact that the major- ity of the children taking part had been in this country less than six months. They were unable to speak English when they came to the school, but-had-heeome. con- versant enough row with the language to enter the sixth and seventh grades in the public schools. “These little Russians are born linguists,” continued Mr. Solomons.~ “We are endeav- oring to instill into their minds ideas of patriotism and a love of this their new fatherland, and the enthusigsm we meet with is surprising.” Then turning to the children he said: “You are no longer Russians, but good Americans. Let’s see whether you can give three good, loyal cheers.” Five hundred heads were raised in the air and five hundred voices rang out with a vim that would have done credit to a bat- talion of war veterans. Then the brief exercises were begun by thirteen boys, carrying national colors, rep- resenting the origmal colonies, who marched down the aisle to the front of the platform. A bright-eyed little maiden about eight years old took the part of Columbia, and as she raised aloft a large silk flag the fol- lowing original salute was given: SALUTE TO THE FLAG! Flag of our great republic; inspirer in battle; guardian of our homes; whose stars and stripes stand for bravery, purity, truth and Union, WE SALUTE THEE! We, the children of many lands, who find rest under thy folds, do pledge our lives, our hearts and our sacred honor to love and protect thee, our Country, and the Liberty of the American people forever. Every hand was raised, and at the words “we salute thee” both arms were stretched out toward the uplitted flag, and an instant later were folded upon the breast. Then to the tune of “Maryland, My Maryland,” an original song, composed at the school, was sung with the utmost enthusiasm. The ttle of the sorg was “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Mrs. Mills, in behalf of the Patria Club, presented the school with a bust of Abra- ham Lircoln, saying that he was the one who first used the words, “the government of the people, by the people, and for the — Enthusiasm took a big hound to the fore lest evening at the meeting of the Naval Reserve Battalion of the National Guard of the District of Columbia, which has been in process of organization for several weeks past. The standing committee of the battalion submitted a most encourag- ing report, a preliminary drill was held, ard the prospects are that before the ar- rival of the new year Washington's ener- getic naval service will be ship-shape in more senses than one. The meeting last evening was held in Washington Hall and was largely attended. Commander Haines was !n the chair and the first proceeding of the meeting was the enrollment and enlistment of twenty new members, swelling the total to about nine- ty. As its chairman, Chandler Haines stat- ed that the standing committee had been very active since the last meeting of the bagtalion. Material progress had been made, including the introduction in each house of Congress of a bill to provide for organizing the naval reserve. Adjutant Hopkirs was directed to read the bill, which was as follows: The Bills. “That, in addition to the companies of volunteer militia now authorized in the District of Columbia, there may be organ- ized not more than four companies of naval militia, which shall constitute a battalion to be known as the Naval Reserve Bat- talion of the District of Columbia. “That the officers of the Naval Reserve Battalion shall consist of one commander and a staff, to consist of one executive offi- cer, with the rank of Heutenant command- €r; one adjutant, one paymaster and one surgeon, each with the rank of lieutenant, and the following petty officers: One mas- ter-at-arms, one yeoman, one apothecary and one chief busier. “That each company shall consist cf one lieutenant. one junior lieutenant, two en- signs. and not less than two or more than six crews to consist of not exceeding six- teen petty office: and me “That the President mar assign officers of the navy to act as instructor and in- spector of the Naval Reserve Battalion: Pro- vided, however, that the sficer so assigned | people.” “I think every one will agree with shall receive no otner pay than that to| me,” she continued, “that we have never which his rank in the navy entitles Sim. | seen a more Impressive sight than you have That the Naval Reserve Battalion shall | presented to vs this morning.
