14 THE EVENING STAR, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1896-16 PAGES. ‘TO PERSUADE BUSINESS MEN. 4& Campaign to Be Made by the Silver Leaders. ‘The Star published exciusively a few days ego the fact that many of the leading sil- ver men have decided to begin a four years’ campaign among the business men of the country, in the hope of converting them to the cause of silver. This news is fully con- firmed by the speech of Mr. Bryan at Den- ver, Tuesday night, when he said that special attention ought to be given fur the next four years to bringing silver argu- ments to the attention of the business men who fought the ticket this year. Mr. Bryan's utterances furnish conclusive evi- dence, as intimated in The Star, tnat there has been an informal agreement among the silver leaders to follow this cue for four years. The arrangements for doing this have not been completed, but something will be decided upon by the middle of De- cember, by which time the silver leaders will have got together and come to a con- clusion. Tre leading method for persuading the business men will probably be that of sending them all the Hterature to be com- manded on the subject of silver. A bureau will be established in this city, and it will take charge of this work. In addition, It is expected that a few of the principal silver papers in the country will devote more of their space hereafter to arguing the ques- tion from a business standpoint. The Na- ticnal Bimetallist. published at Chicago previous to the election, and which was recognized as one of the foremost ex- ponents of the silver thought, was sus- pended after the election, but an effort will be male to revive it and piace it on a dif- ferent footing. Several pages of it will be devoted to business notes for business men, and other pages will be full of the argu- ments of the most noted men in favor of a bimetallic standard for business interests. aa ee It Was a Desert. From the Scottish A mother was assisting her little boy with his geography, when they came to the word “desert,” which he could not un- derstand. His mother explained that it was a barren place—a place where nothing would grow.
