INTERESTING G —— OSSIP There seems to be reason for believing that the ground upon which Mr. Ryan and his associates in New York are standing as their base while trying to get hold of the Seaboard Air Line Is fast slipping awey from under them, and that it is more than probable that they will yet be disappointed in thelr ambition in this respect. ‘This, at least, is the reasonable conclu- sion according to a message received by The Star today from Baltimore, where President Hoffman of the Seaboard, who hus just returned from New York, de- clined to be interviewed regarding a re- port that financial difficultics have arisen in regard to the deal. Mr. Hoffman admitted, however, that a hitch had occurred, refusing, however, to sey of what it consisted. It is stated on the street and among bankers that the Seaboard people have refused to allow the expert employed by Mr. Ryan to examine the books of the company, as it had pre- viously been understood should be done, so thet the great earning abilities of the Sea- board could be proven to the satisfaction of all concerned. in banking circles of eastern cities, prin- cipally Washington, New York and Malu- ™more, there has been much talk for a cou- pie of days regarding the supposed inter- ruption of pending negotiauons for the transfer of the Seaboard, and it is thought in Some quarters that the deal may not be of ed through by the time the optio: Mr. Ryan and his associates expires, w! is Monday next. Reasons for the Reports, Three reasons are given as the basis of these reports. The first is that the money necessary to consummate the purchase has not been obtained by the New Yorkers; the second that the consent of the tiecessary fourths of the stockholders to thc hot Geen secured, without whic: hew owners would be powerless { tate a policy of their own, and the th: thet the influence of the Louisville nd ashville raiiroad is making itself felt in unexpected quarters. hin the past few weeks the condition railway problem in the south has ne material change, and it is & nt devclopme in that se 1 to make the Seaboard th underg lieved that re: tion have serv much*more att a active property to railroad investors than it was even a month ago. by the Illinois Cen- Improvements made R: Company, which have just tr way been completed, at New Orleans, quarters, great of the and opened to the public Wil, it is thought in some eedily result in giving that corporation the practical monopoly trying of the importing and ¢ ; trade of that port, and will compr! ection there by the Southern and oth- er railway companics centering there of immense elevators and wharves to su fully compete with its rivals in the The zequisition of the § e the Levisville and N arrying trade is limited so far a perts are concerned to Charleston and Savanneb, the advantage of acquiring at extensive facil! It is generally understood that if th del Js pat made, by Monday next negot tions, so far as Mr. Ryan and those allie: vith him are concerned, may be regarded s off, and the situation will then assur an entirely different phase. The Hoffman-McLane Stock. The purchase of the stock held by the Hoffman-McLane pool carries with it, so 1% is stated by those fully informed on th: subject, the full control of the Seaboar:! Air we system. The stock pooled with: the commit;ee of which Mr. McLane i chairman amounts to about § ") shares. In response to a circular recs ently issued by Mr. McLane, it is understood that the cou- sent of about three-fourths of the pooleu stock bas already been secured for th: sale to the New York syndicate at a price dicate has deposited a heavy for- felt to take stock at $125 a share, provided the necessary amount to control can b« secured. Persons who are close to Mr. Ryan say that ‘the idea that that gentleman ¢ get all the money necessary to complete the deal as absurd, and they as: thai the funds for the purpese are already in bank. nno as WANT TO ME MRS. Denver’ Ladiex Urgently Invite Her to Accompany Her Haxba A number of women, representing sey- eral social and political organizations cf Denver, Col., have sent a pressing invita- tion to Mrs. ‘William J. Decision Regarding Rebates . Restrictions. Judge Showalter in the federal court at Chicago yesterday rendered an important decision in the rebate case of the whisky company. He decided that the compact involved in the rebate vouchers is legal, and that the undcrstanding does not pre- clude the buyer from purchasing from else- where. The terms merely stipulate that if the buyer takes gcods from the Ameri- can Spirits Company and wishes to take vantage of the rebates he must not deal elsewhere. This decision ts of the highest importance, since it confirms the trade methods of the sugar trust and other cor- porations, oe . a An Old Resident of Frederick. The death of John H.
