10 EVENING STAR, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER i1, 189¢-TWELVE PAGES, : CALLS IT A MURDER Judge Henderson Denounces Lynch- ing of Sidney Randolph. BLOT ON MONTGOMERY COUNTY —_—_+— Calls on the Grand Jury to Do Its Duty. —— = ARNIVAL OF CRIME Sa ‘The charge of Judge Henderson to the grand jury of Montgomery county, made at Rockville last Monday, was a most abie document in every way and was calculated to send a cold chill down the t lawbreakers who hav gcod name of Mon the past year. Judg been disg! county rson somery Hen¢ the questions of lynching and infractions of the local option law without gloves: Part of his charge relating to general crimes and to the Randolph lynching was as follows: “At the last Ma congratulated the ch term of this court 1 grand jury and the pub- lic generally upon the notable exemption of this county from all crimes of a serious character. It is a matter of profound re- st that such congratulations cannot be ated at this term. Since that time an epidemic of crime seems to have spread over the county, and during the entir summer crime has followed crime in such rapid succession that the jail has been kept crowded to its full capacity, and the place: of those released on bail heen immediately filled by other accused persons, so that pel haps rever before m the history of this court has there been such a number of cases ready for presentation to the gran: jury immediately upon its organization Some of them under charges of the gravest character. In the early morning of May 25 last an asscu!t was made upon the sleeping Tam ly ef Mr. R. Lemuel Buxton of Gaithersbure, which for its horrible fierceness, atrocit and brutality and the absence of apparent motive, is without parallel, at least in my experience. It was the work of a fiend or a madman. By this assault Mr. Buxion, bis wife and his two daughters were des- perately wounded, and the injury inflictec en his youngest daughter Sadie were suc’ that they resulted in her death ten o: twelve days thereafter. “For the commission of this dreadful crime a negro named Sidney Randolph was arrested, and after the investigation mad by the coroner's jury, who by their verdict charged him with the perpetration of the he was duly committed to the jail county to await the action of the grand jury. m the 14th of June last, before the hor- consternation excited by this awful y had subs a terrible affray oc- among a party of negroes attending a church meeting of some kind at Sandy Sprit hich resulted in the violent and death of Clarence Thornton and tion of severe wounds upon several engaged in the affray. Mr. John T. Chesley of 1737 17th street owns a Boston terrier named “Pete,” and Mr. Eenjamin Roodhouse of 17th and 8S strecis is the possesssor of a bull dog that answers to the name “Mr. Flynn.” Both gentlemen value their respective animals very highly. Although neighbors, the dogs have been in the habit of fighting, and as a result the owners are no longer friends. The Boston terrier and the bull dog had a set-to Friday last on the lawn fronting Mr. Roodhouse’s house. The outcome of the en- gagement was a trial, which occupied sev- eral hours late yesterday afternoon before Judge Kimball in the Police Court, and proved quite a society event. Mr. Rood- house was the defendant,.and he was charged by Mr. Chesley with cruelty to animals. It seems, from the testimony, that dur- ng the fight “Pete” buried his teeth .in “Mr. Flynn” and could not be persuaded leg go.” Mr. Roodhouse, so said wit- thereupon plunged a knife into several times, cutting him back of the shoulder and across the neck. It is hardly necessary to state that “Pete” released his hold of “Mr. Flynn.” He also sank to the ground, dog-fashion, and lay unconscious. The dog was re- moved to a dog hospital, and is reported to be in a critical condition. r. Roodhouse's defense was to the ef- fect that “Mr. Flynn” is personal property and entitled to the protection of the owner. “Pete,” it was claimed, is older and heavier than “M ynn’? and has several times prior to Friday last painfully injured the latter. Mr. Roodhouse said he thought un- cer the circumstances that he had a right to cut “Pete.” The witnesses examined were Humane Officer Reiplinger, Dr. David Buckingham, Joseph Johnson and Silas Brock. Judge Kimball disposed of the case by tining Mr. Roodhouse $10. The amount was paid. ee SUCIETY OF ARTISTS, Plans for the Spring Exhibition in This City. A meeting of the Society of Washington Artists was held last evening at the studio ! of Mr. U. S. J. Dunbar, 62% i7th street. Two matters of interest were taken up—the election of officers and the selection of a place for holding the annual spring exhi- bition. The officers chosen for the ensuing year were: President, E. C. Messer; vice presl- dent, H. H. Nichols; secretary, W. H. Chandlee; treasurer, G. F. Gibbs; executive committee, Parker Mann, E. F. Andrews, S. J. Dunbar, Miss Jane B. Curryis and B. Chilton, together with the four offi- cers named above. The choice of a place for the spring exhi- bition lies between the assembly hall of the Cosmos Club and the present Corcoran Art Gallery, but no decision was reached. The members of the society also have un- der consideration a proposition to invite artists from other cities to exhibit, a plan which would doubtless add considerably to the interest of the exhibition. ——— AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c.
