A pile of great iron buckets, a steam en- gine and boiler and a number of pieces of iron framework and arches stacked up at the corner of 15th and F streets north- west have excited the curiosity of passers- by on that busy thoroughfare. An excav: tion of large dimensions has been made near the center of 15th street, alongside the cable car track, and a more extensive open- ing has been made in the street on the west side. All of this means that a new sewer is to be put into F street and connected with the trunk sewer that now extends down 15th street. A tunnel sunk twenty-three feet below the cable car tracks will form the connecting link, and this junction is now being made, after which the construc- tion of the F street sewer will be com- menced in earnest. It will be at that time that the iron framework now piled up on the street cor- ner will come into use. It is the equip- ment of a hoister and conveyer, the first one to be used in this city. By means of a track and framework, 380 feet in length, along F street, the big iron buckets will travel from the point where the exca- vating is going on to the place where the brickwork of the sewer is being completed. By this means the earth which has been excavated at one end of the ditch will be transported and dumped into the other end, filling the trench over the newly built sew- er und avoiding the necessity cf piling up the earth on the street. Where the hoist- ing and conveying apparatus crosses a street room will be left for wagons and other vehicles to pass under. : ———e Delegates Elected. The Mt. Zion Aumiversary Celebration. —Other Lecal Notes of General Interest to Citizens. The condition of Mr. William McClure, the @ged white man who was shot Friday even- ing within a short distance of bis home on the Falls Church road, is reported as im- Froving. The patient is at the Emergency Hospital, and despite the fact that one of the bullets penetrated his left lung it is ex- pected that he will recover. He is a vigor- ous man of his age, and, with a strong con- stitution, he is expected to come around all right. Though the hunt for the would-be assas- sin has been continued, there is very littie hope of the negro highwayman ever being apprehended by the Virginia authorities. There are too many desperate negro charac- ters living in that neighborhood who would not have hesitated in cutting the old man’s throat were they aware that he had $20 in his pocket. Berd Hayslop, colored, aged nineteen, who lives in Virginia, was arrested Saturday night by Precinct Detective Burrows on suspicion of having committed the crime. The arrest was made in “Boston, the negro acting in a very suspicious way. As nothing incriminating could be found, the suspect was released. Mt. Zion Anniversary.
