Mra. Peter of Baltimore Sues Mrs. Gaither on the Charge of Libel. Special Dispatch to the Philadelphia Press, BALTIMORE, Md., August 29.—Mrs. El- la Peter, the Givorced wife of State Senator Wm. B. Peter, has brought suit for $60,000 damages against Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Gaither. It is a case of alleged libel of one society woman by another. Both are prominent in Baltimore. Mrs. Peter is a granddaughter of the late ex-Governor Mercer of Maryland, a niece of the late ex-Governor Swann and a sister of Col. Richard S. Mercer. Mrs. Peter, whose maiden name was Mercer, is also connected with the Pages, Roskells and other prominent families of Maryland and Virginia, and a lineal descendant of George Mason, who figured prominently in colonial histcry. - Thomas Gaither is a capitalist residing in Howard county, with a residence in Baltimore. Mrs. Gaither was a Miss May of Virginia and belongs to a family of po- sition and wealth. The Gaither connection is one of the largest and most influential in Maryland. The families had been very intimate until two years ago, when Mrs. Peter was divorced from Senator Peter. Just about the time sherobtained the di- vorce she began* to recéive anonymous threatening letters, Some of them attacked her character, and somejjthreatened with personal violence. Some stated that vit- rtol would be thrown in Mrs. Peter's face, and others that she would be blown up with dynamite. At the same time her friends began to receive letters from the Same source attacking the character of Mrs. Peter. The same letters attacked Mrs. Peter's little girls, Mary and Emily, who are now but fourteen and fifteen years old, respec- tively. The letters coniinued to come steadily until last February. Mrs. Peter accuses Mrs. Gaither of writ- ing the letters. Geneenl Pasaencer Agent. MEDICAL Dr. CZARRA’S PRIVATE DISPENSARY, No, 619-621 Pu. ave. n.w., Washington, D. C. Roose of ‘Washington is making his annual visit to Cape May and greeting his many friends here. He is accompanied by Mr. Thomas Norwood. Both are stopping at Congress Hall. Mr. Roose has happy faculty of | making friends wherever he goes, and of retaining them forever after. There is probably no man who comes to Cape May | who is more warmly received and none who is more entitled to be. Mr. Roose has a very wide acquaintanceship, and is filled with faith in mankind, and a noble desire to convince his friends that life is a pleas- ant heritage when properly viewed. He is a Free Mason of the highest degree, the thirty-third, and furnishes an excellent ex ample of its ennobling influence. He doubted the sincerity of this admission. They were more than will- ing to wait for foreign help. The speaker cited the history of the trade dollars, and quoted from a speech of Mr. Beck's facts showing how jong the republican party had warred on the use of the great Ameri- can money metal. The resources of our country were compared, and, in the opinion of the speaker, were more than suffix to guarantee success in undertaking the free coinage of silver. He dwelt on the re- lationship of the United States, as the greatgst of republics, to the world at large, and cOncluded that no matter what other fashions we might import from abroad, yet in matters touching our tnteresis, as well as those of mankind at large, we must ever lead and set those fashions for the benefit of our own and of all peoples. Other Speeches, Mr. Milton FE. Smith was the next speak- er, and, like the others, presented the po- ucal situation clearly. Mr. R. E. The greatest enthusiasin and unanimity was displayed, and the Burnt Mills district will pole « heavy vote for the democratic ticket. ee GOLD AND sILy two. Figures Which Show That Metals Have Depreciated. F. 8. Nelson, in the New York Herald, contributes an interesting discussion of the value of currency, showing the results of a computation of the changing value of silver and gold. By the examination of statistics Mr. Nel- son finds that, in comparison with wages, not only has silver depreciated 45 per cent from its value in 1870, but gold also, in- stead of advancing or even remaining sta- tinary, appears to have fallen 17 per cent curing the same period of time. In the following table there is stated the number of ounces of silver which were equivalent in value to one ounce of gold in 1870, and every second year thereafter. The quotients obtained by dividing each of these quantities py 15.57, the ratio of 1870, as given in the second column, indi- cate the rise of gold above its value in 1870, provided the value of silver has re- mained unchanged. In the same the price of an ounce of silver appears in the fourth column, while the quotients in the fifth show how far silver has de- preciated if gold has been constant. The quantities In the first and fourth columns are London quotations. They can be found on page 42 of the “Statistical Abstract of the United States, No. 1S," except the quotations for 1896, which were taken from the most recent daily market reports: Table Showing Rise of Gold, Based on Sliver, and Fall of Silver, Based on Both Gold. Silver. ‘Silver. 1.00 S18 1.278 1156 L152 11 1.13 aa 1.086 438 For the purposes of comparison with the fivctuations of wages, a table is used from the “Senate Report on Wholesale Prices, Wages and Transportation,” commonly called the “Aldrich Report” Table Showing Fall of Gold and Sil- ver, Based on Labor. Average of Ratio of Wages on a Gold of 1860, to Labor. ¥ A table, bas stable securities, shows a si The conclusion is drawn that silver tc not only has not retained its former com- mercial value, nor even one-half thereof, but it ts really worth only thirty-six per ent of what it was in 1870; while gold has neither doubled in value nor remained sta- tionary even, but has fallen twenty-five per cent below its level of twenty-five yeara ago. soe Capt.
