Grand Opera House.—The second week of the comic opera season commences Mon- day night at the Grand Opera House with a grand revival of Gilbert and Sullivan’s nautical comic opera, H.M.S.Pinafore. Pin- a fore was originally produced in London st the Opera Comique, May 25, 1878. It was given its first American production in Balti- more by Mr. John T. Ford in 1879. It has been sung in this country and Europe more times than any ten operas ever written. It has been sung by children’s Pinafore com- panies on board of real ships in real Ww: ter, and It was given a production in Sing Sing prison by the convicts. ‘While the re- vival of Pinafore at the Grand: Monday night may not be quite as novel as some of the above performances, it will be bet- ter artistically. The two prima donzas, Miss Carrie Roma and Miss Clara ‘Thropp, who sang the roles of Amorita and Angelo in Ozibuka's opera last week with such pronounced success, will alternate tais weck in the rele of Jo- sephine. The part of Sir Joseph Porter will be played by Washington’s favorite comedian, Mr. Frank David. Mr. Francis Gaillard, who will sing the role of Captain Corcoran, is an artist of recognized ability. He was the original Pippo in the “Mascot'? and played that Part for four years In London. Particularly enjoyable will be Madame Gaillard’s Buttercup. This lady has a charming stage presence and she and her husband are artists. Mr. John C. Havens {s cast for the part of Ralph Rackshaw. Mr. Havens was with the Bostonians last season and did such able work with that company that his suc- cess as “Ralph” ts assured. Mr. McFad- den will appear as Dick Deadeye and Miss Handy as‘Hebe. The popular prices at the Grand will remain the same, 15, 25, 50 and 4 cents, with a good reserved seat on first floor for 25 cents. Hox office always open. Bijou.—The rejuvenated Bijou Theater will throw open its doors to the playgoing pub- lic tonight, and those who attend will have the first opportunity of inspecting the re- markable transformation which Manager Whitesell has wrought in the house. Once it was Washington's most popular theater, and on its boards have appeared some of the mosi famous players of the past. It is Manager Whitesell’s purpose to restore it to a prominent place in the amusement world of Washington, and to this end he has expended a great deal of money and energy. The theater has been renovated in- side and out, and its light cream-colored walls, showing plainly from far down the avenue, are but indications of the trans- fermation that has taken place in the in- terior. On entering the broad doors one finds himself in one of the handsomest lob- hies in town. It has smocth tiled flooring, mirror-decked walls and a metal ceiling, which ts at once novel and effective. The general effect 1s heightened by handsome electric fixtures and numerous lights. Bright new carpets lead up the stairs in an auditorium which has been transform in everything except its shape. Cream is the predominating tint, touched up grace- fully with gold and green, while the blaze from numerous electric I'ghts makes every- thing warm and homelike. Graceful dr: peries adorn the boxes and the arch in the rear of the auditorium, while a new drop curtain az.d renewed scenery will make the stage quite ir keeping with the rest of the house. For his opening attraction Manager Whitesell will present Daniel Sully, the popular exponent of quaint old Irish char- acters, in his famous creation of O'Brien, in “The Millionaire.” Both r have been seen here before this is the first engage- ment that Mr. Sully has played at free- silver rates. Daily matinees will be inau- gurated Monday afternoon, when every lady in the audience will be presented with a rose as a souvenir. at regular pric Kernan’s Lyceum.—The attraction at the Lyceum next week will be one of excep- tional merit.
