Wanted to Enter the Navy. It was very hot in the Police Court, an4 the even two dozen prisoners who were be- hind the bars sweltered and perspired, and some of them even looked forward with Dieasure to the opportunity of spending a couple of weeks at the jail or workhouse, where cool breezes blow from across the Anacostia. One of the first to plead not guilty was a colored boy by the name of Kdwand Whittier, who was charged with destroying private property. A druggist who heeps a store at 14th street and Rhode Island avenue testifiel that some days ago Whittier came to his place and asked for @ sheet of paper, an envelope and a 2-ccnt stamp. The paper and stamp were placed in an envelope. Later in the day the boy came back and insisted that he didn’t get his stamp ané wanted his morey back. Whittler became abusive and was finally ejected. A muuute later a big hole was kicked in a canvas sign which stood in front of the door and set forth the list of sirups that could be had with soda water inside. Whittier gave his side of the affair, to the effect that he accidentally pushed the sign over when he started to run. Judge Miller fined him $10. Nellie Carter and Susie Reynolds, two tough-looking colored girls, were charged With parading the streets at night under suspicious circumstances. They were given three months in the workhouse in default of bonds. “George Wright,” called Clerk Harper. An elderly white man, much the worse for wear, and showing the effects of a triple-plate jag, stepped to the rail. “Why, your name is Branch P. Wright,” said Mr. Harper, who has a good memory for names and faces. “That's right, sir.” “Why did you give the name of George if it really is Branch?” asked Judge Mer. ell, really, your honor, I don’t recotlect just what name I did give. Wright testified that he was from Falls Church, ‘and in view of the fact that he had kept sober for three months, he thought he should be trea with consi@- ation, Judge Miller thought otherwise, and sent him down in default of bonds. When George Williams, a young colored man, stepped to the bar of justice he was about the worst-locking specimen of a hor- rible example thet has been scen in the Police Court since—well, since George was last ‘n court, a couple of months ago.
