Monday eet Northwest. Bryan Received by His Former Neighbors at Salem, Hl. Never before In its history has Salem, il, a little town of 2,000 people, been so ablaze in glory as it was last night. Ordi- narily the citizens retire for the night by 9 o'clock. At 10 ft Is as quiet as a country churchyard; at midnight there is nothing left with which to compare the st!liness that prevails. But last night it was dif- ferent. . J. Bryan, leader of the demo- eratic national campaign, a native of the place, returned. The whole town was out to meet him. Then there were sky rockets and roman candles and red fire burning along the route by which Mr. Bryan was conducted to the home of his sister. When the train pulled up to the Salem depot there were many persons en hand ready to welcome Mr. Bryan from all over Marion county. The reception committee composed of the following citizens: n. J. S. Martin, T. E. Merritt, S. J. Smith, Thomas S. shall, Dr. W. H. Young, Dwyer Evans, B. G. Martin, Rev. S. P. Yeung, J. D. Tilford, Gilbert Williams and J.D. Kag Mr. and Mrs. Bryan were escorted to a carriage by the committee and taken to the ome of Mr. Bryan's sister, Mrs. James Baird. Awaiting them at the house were Mrs. Mary Van Antwerp, Mrs. Davenport. Mrs. Zaock Jennings, all relatives of the guest. and his sisters, Misses Fannie and Mary Bryan. It was not the wish of Mr. Bryan to have a celebration at this time as but two short weeks ago he was called to Salem to attend the deathbed of his mother. She was buried by the side of Judge Bryan, who passed away sixteen years ago. Eut the people in their enthusiasm and de- sire to honor the man who went away from them scarcely a score of years ago, unknown to fame, gave vent to their feelings. When the carriage reached the home of his sister his former fellow-townsmen were there by the hundreds. They cheered and shouted wile bands played and the anvils boomed. They demanded a speech, and Mr. Bryan acquiesced. As he stepped out upon the little vine- covered porch, in response to the calls of his friends, he shov ed by the twitching of the muscles of his face and the huskiness of his voice that he was deeply affected. He needed no introduction. < As soon as he could control his voice, he spoke as follows: “Fellow Citizéns—I don’t knéw what to say more than to.thank.xou., No spot, I think, can ever become so dear to a man as the spot about which clusters sacred memories of early childhcod.~ k have come back to Salem every few months since I left here, and no spot on earth will be so dear as Salem... (Applause I assure you I appreciate the friendly interest which ycu manifest, amd more 0 because in this there is no party. I ge@ here my friends in all parties. persons of different political faith, as well as those who agree with the principles which I have adyo- cated, and I am deeply touched with this manifestation of your esteem and confi- nce. ® I wish I could have with me the gen- tleman who occupies the place with me on the national ticket. J wish you could see and become acquainted with Mr. Sew- all, who is our candidate for Vice Presl- dent. Although my acquaintance with bim fs not long I think a great deal of him. I think he is a manly man, and I wish he could come here and greet you and become acquainted with the enthu- siesm that has been manifested tonight. If elected my fullest hope will be gratified. I have but one desire, and that to bring back to our people the government as our fathers intended it, a government which shall be conducted on principles of equality before the law; which shall protect the rights of life ‘and liberty. Which shall know no difference between the simplest citizen in the land and the greatest citizen in the land; a government which shall be no respecter of persons, but shall, Ike heaven, treat all alike. (Ap- plause.) “I don’t belteve that a candidate for of- fice kas any right to ask people to vote for him as a personal favor, but has a right to claim the vote of all that believe that through his election they can best pro- tect their cwn interests and serve thelr ccuntry. That is the theory upon which a man may cbtain support. Your votes are your own, to use according to your own judgment.’ I can simply appezl to you to take the issues and study them as citizens upon whom rest grave responsibilities, and when you have decided, all I ask of you is to let your vote register your wish. Let yeur ballots register a free man’s will, and then, no matter who Is elected, we will be satisfied. I can cnly say here over and over again that I am deeply gratified for this very cordial reception at the place of my birth, and you will accept that until I ean th, eration. When he had ended his talk there was Jeud and enthusiastic applause. Then the arsembled citizens formed in line along the walk in front of the house and be- neath the huge trees, and Mr. Bryan pass- ed alcng in front of them and gave each a hearty hand-shake. There were no other speeches. The people departed to their homes, and Mr. and Mrs. Bryan went to rest, weary and worn from the excitement of the day. ‘The train bearing Mr. and Mrs. Bryan from Chicago stopped at many stations, ik you personally for your consid- where the democratic candidate spoke briefly. —— CANADA'S NEW CABINET. The executive committee of the gold standard democrats of Illinois met in_a protracted session yesterday at Chicago and prepared an address to the democracy of the other states in the Union. It was the unanimous opinion of the committee that a second democratic national conven- tion should be called to nominate candi- dates for President and Vice President. The address is as follows: : “To our fellow democrats of other states: A national convention convened under the constituted authority of our party has just closed its session in the city of Chicago. “It entered upon its work by violating all the party precedents in the rejection of a distinguished democrat as its tem- porary presiding officer. “It deprived a sovereign state of a voice in its deliberations by unseating without cause or legal justification delegatez elect- ed with all the regularity known to party organization. “It refused to indorse the honesty and fidelity of the presént democratic national administration. “It adopted a pletform which favors the free and unlimited coinage of silver by this country alone at the ratio of 16 to 1 and thereby it repudiated a time-honored dem- ocratic principle, wkich demands the strict- est maintenance of a sound and stable currency. “Finally, to make it still plainer, that although in name, it was not in fact, a democratic convention, .it nominated for ‘President one who is not in his politics and has not always been, even in profes- sions, a democrat. Ss Facing a Cris! “This has made such a crisis, both for the nation and the democratic party, that sound myney democrats must at once de- cide what political action they will take for the pretection of the honor of the na- tion, the prosperity of the people and the life and usefulness of the party. “The sound money democrats of Illinois haye fully made up their minds that a new democratic naticnal convention should be called for at the earliest feasible day, to nominate democratic candidates for Presi- dent and Vice President, and adopt a plat- form of democratic prineiples, and they gesire to state to the democrats of the other states thelr reasons, as follows: “1. Sound money democrats owe it to the country to make it certain at once that their revolt against free silver is determin- ed and will be organized. It is unfair to oblige the credit of the nation and the business and industrial interests of the People to merely guess what the sound money democrats will do in November and wait until November to find out. “2. The nomination of a new ticket is the logical course. Without it and a sound money democratic campa'gn, the whole edu- cational force of sound money democratic sentiment would be paralyzed from the be- ginning. Republicans cannot argue the sound money question to democratic voters. Repubiican sincerity on that question 1s doubted by the mass of democrats. The tariff question will be put to the front and insisted upon by republican speakers and the republican press, as it has persistently been by Mr. McKinley himself. Democrats will not listea to lessons on finance when accompanied by abuse of the democratic party. The most effective force at this time for a campaign {s the force resting In the sound money democrats; for they are profourdly in earnest and can get a hear- ing from democrats that the republicans cannot possibly ge Preserve the Party. ‘3. A new convention would also preserve for the future the opportunities of the democratic party. Unless a clear-cut sepa- ration is made between the genuine demo- crats and democrats who are drifting into populism, or are already ‘n populism; and unless a clear-cut separation is supported by organization the party has no chance of regaining public confidence for years to come. The sound money democrats in the different states must either make it clear that they have no asscclation with the Bryan party, or they must accept associa- tion and entanglement with it, and all state organizations will in the public mind be for it that do not make it absolutely clear that they are against it. _ “The sound money democrats are already sufficiently organized in this state to be able to meet their fellow democrats in a new convention, and are anxious to confer with representatives of other states when- ever a representative conference can be brought about. “Communications should be addressed to Charles E. Ewing, chairman, Palmer House, Chicago. (Signed) “JOHN M. PALMER, “CHARLES E. EWING, “JAMES ECKELS, RANKLIN MACVEAGH, ‘BENJAMIN T. CABLE, ‘WILLIAM S. FOREMAN, “THOMAS A. MORAN, ‘JOHN P. Another lynching disgrace was probably averted Sunday night by the prompt action of the authorities of Prince George’s coun- ty, Md. who brought Richard King, ac- cused of the murder of James Crooks, to Baltimore from Marlboro’, and lodged him In the city jall for safe keeping. The ac- cvsed 13 a brother-in-law of the dead man, and was arrested Tuesday, after it became known that Crooks’ injuries were serious. Crooks died on Saturday from the effects of two fractures of the skull, which were inflicted, tt 1s charged, by King on the Fourth of July during ‘a general drunken brawl, which took place in front of King’s house, which {@ about a mile from Marlboro’. An inquest was held in the case at Marl- boro’ on Saturday. King was formally charged with the murder. Since that time the feeling has been very strong against him, and it 4s said that open threats were made that plans had been formulated, and that King was to have been lynched Sun- Gay night. Sheriff Thomas C. Underwood became aware of the danger, and wisely meved the prisoner to Baltimore. pee a I Moreland Pleaded Guilty. Major W. C. Moreland, ex-city attorney of Pittsburg, entered a plea of guilty yes+ terday to the charge of embezzlement of $26,000 of city funds. His assistant, W. H. House, pleaded not guilty and was placed on trial. The auditor’s report last week shows a discrepancy of $300,000 In the ac- counts of Messrs. Moreland and House. oe Kicked to Denth. Patrick Carney, sixty years old, was kicked to death Surdcy evening at Chica- go by James Wilson. The killing was the result of a family row. The murderer tried to escape after killing his man, but was caught after a hard run by Police Officer Ryan. The murder was a most brutal affair, Wileon literally stamping the life out of the old man. .
