14 THE EVENING STAR, THURSDAY, JUNE 18 1896-SIXTEEN PAGES. ALEXANDRIA AFFAIRS|THE BUXTON MYSTERY Policeman Hall Suspended for Sheoting a Boy. Cases Before the Mayor and in the Other Courts—Local Notes of Interest. A regular monthly meeting of the board of police commissioners was held last night Lebind closed doors in the mayor's office. As was expected, the case of Policeman James Hall, charged with shooting William Bright while trying to evade arrest, wes taken up. The testimony was identically the same as published in The Star at the time. A number of eye-witnesses to the shooting and several officers were exam- ined. After carefully considering the ev! dence the commissioners, upon motion of Mr. Tackett, decided to suspend Officer Hall, without pay, for the period of sixty days. ‘The commissioners also decided to give each member of the force one week's holi- day, beginning July 1. No other business of importance was transacted. Police Court. Mayor Thompson this morning had quite a lengthy docket to dispose of. The first case called was that of Eugene and Hollie Grant, two small colored boys, arrested by Officer Reach, charged with assault and beating Robert Magruder, colored; fined $5 cach. John O'Neil, arrested by Officer Knight: charge, drunk in the street; fined $1. Fannie Stuart and Blanche Washins- ton, colored, arrested by Officer Davis charge, disorderly conduct: fined $1 each. William Raymone, colored: charge, steal- ing a lot of pigs in Fairfax county; held for Fairfax authorities. Henry Adams, John Carter and George Williams, arrested by Officer Young and Special Officer Loven; charge, vagrancy; sent to jail, subject to chain gang, for ninety days. David Brown, arrested by Officer Ticer; charge, drunk and disorderly; fined $5. Death of Mr. Washington. The many friends and acquaintances of Mr. George Washington will regret to learn of his death, which occurred yesterday af- ternoon at his home, corner of Duke and Prince streets, at 4:40 o'clock. Mr. Washington had not been enjoying good health of late, and he had often com- plained of symptoms which seemed to be precursors of paralysis or apoplexy. Yes- terday morning he was found in his bed helpless, speechless and unconscious. Dr. Snowden was at once summoned, and, realizing the gravity of the case, he had Drs. William and Thomas Gibson sum- moned, and, though they did all that science could suggest, their efforts were un- availing. Mr. Washington was born in Westmore- land county seventy-two years ago. He was a son of the late Lawrence Washing- ton, who was a ¢ rendant of Gen. George Washington. He came to this city when a oung man, and engaged in the commls- sion business, which he conducted up to the spring of INGl, when he left Alexandria with the confederate soldiers. During the war he was a member of the famous Black Horse Cavalry. At the close of the war he returned to this city, and with Mr. George K. Whitmer embarked in the commission and auction business. He subsequently prosecuted the alone, until the commercial depression, a few years ago, when he was compelled to abandon the ereantile life. After the first election of over Cleveland he was appointed to a po- nm in the internal revenue service, and after the Interval following the term of President Harrison was reappointed, which tion he heid at the time of his death. shington was of a sociable nature and had many friends and acquaintances, who will sincerely lament his death. He leaves a widow and four children, E: nt Musicale. The Young Men's Sodality Lyceum Hall, on Duke street, was last night crowded, the occasion being the musical recital of schol- arship of Miss Mamie Devitt’s class. Report Submitted. Mr. A. W. Sinclair, recently appointed by Judge C. E. Nicol examiner of records for this judicial district, to examine the court records and list bonds, etc., held by guard- jans, administrators and in trust for as- sessment, has made his report to the com- joner of revenue of this city. He re- the amount of bonds, etc., as about $270,000, most of which, however, has al- aly been assessed. Corporation Court. In the corporation court yesterday Judge J. K. M. Norton presiding, the following business was disposed of: Commonwealth agt. Cornelius Smith, colored, for felonious- ly cutting Alice Rogers, also colored; ver- dict of guilty and punishment fixed at one year in the penitentiary. The case of Ruth Carroll, colored, in- dicted for the murder of her infant child, was continued until July 2, by request of her counsel. The application for a charter for the Nor- ton Manufacturing Company was denied heeaus provisions set forth were not in accordance with the law on the subject. which court adjourned for the day. vel Noten. ‘ainuel Bland, the colored man who was rt by jumping from a train near Mason's all, an account of which appeared in The Star, is rapidly improving. Se Has Inspected Consulates. Mr. Robert Chilton, chief of the consular bureau of the State Department, has just returned to Washington from a six weeks’ teur of inspection of the United States ecnsulates in Mexico. Mr. Chilton touched at Havana on the way to Mexico and also at Progresso, Yucatan, and coming north he visited the City of Mexico, Vera Cruz end the border consulates, winding up at Durango. This is the first time in many years that there has been a thorough in- spection of the consulates in Mexico by ar officer of the department, and it may be expected] that ihe result will be the in- auguration of new methods in some in- stances. -e- National Gaurd Officers Commissioned The President has commissioned the tol- lowing officers of the National Guard of the District: James L. Raadelph’s Guilt the Subject of Many Serious Doubts. z An Alleged Confession Exploded— Baltimore Detectives Again ‘Working on the Case. Special Dispatch to The Evening Star. ROCKVILLE, Md., June 18.—The interest ia the Buxton mystery has not abated, and, no matter how many wild and improbable rumors are put in circulation, they are sure to find eager and responsive ears and not a small amount of credulity. The doubts of the guilt of Sidney Randolph, notwith- standing the action of the coroner’s jury in finding him responsible for the death of Sadie Buxton, have increased rather than diminished since the verdict was rendered, and inquiries are being extended in a quiet manner in certain directions where it is be- lieved a plausible clue to the real perpe- trators of the crime may be discovered. A great many of the people of Gaithersburg are convinced of Randolph's guilt, as they have been since he was first apprehended, but the fact also remains that a large pro- portion of the population are equally cer- tain that he had nothing to do with it. A leading member of the coroner's jury said yesterday that he had very strong doubts on the subject of Randolph's guilt, and would await with great interest the devel- opments at the regular trial of the accused, which will probably occur in November. Jailor Peyton, who exercises a close watch ever Randolph, is convinced that the prisoner is innocent of the crime, and Pey- ton’s opinion is shared by the other offi- cials of the county, with the possible excep- tion of Deputy Sheriff Horton Thompson. The rumor has been in circulation for two or three days that Dink Neale, George Neale’s cousin, who was arrested on sus- picion of knowing something about the tragedy, and placed in the Rockville jail, had gone to Mr. Wesley English after his release from custody last Saturday and in- formed Mr. English that Randolph had made a confession of the crime to him (Neale). Neale declared that Randolph had told him that he made his living by burg- larizing houses, and that he had first en- tered the English house, which adjoins Buxton’s, but was frightened off by the young man upstairs waking up. Neale as- serted that Randolph said that he then Went next door into the Buxton house, where he “got away” with four people, but didn't get any plunder because he got nervous. The next day, Sunday, Mr. Eng- lish went down to the jail and saw Ran- Uolph, but Randolph merely recounted the same story that he has all along. Jailor Peyton declares that Dink Neale had no possible opportunity while in jall to see Randolph, as their cells were in different parts of the jail, and that the only time they were anywhere near each other was when all the prisoners were taken out into the yard one day, in order to let visitors have a chance to identify Randolph. The Baltimore detectives, Seybold and Pohler, have been in the vicinity for a day or two, and it is said that it would not be surprising if mere arrests would follow in a short while, and that those taken into custody were of fairer complexion than the cnes heretofore apprehended on suspicion of being connected with the crime. ——-.—__ To Look After Delegates. The Christian Endeaver Society of the St. Paul's English Lutheran Church gave an entertainment Tuesday evening, the proceeds of which will be used to- ward defraying the expenses of pro- viding a hospitable welcome and over- sight during the July cenvention of the state delegations from Texas and West Virginia, which have been assigned for headquarters to this church. The program included a piano solo by Harry Stratton: duet, Misses Richie McLean and Fame Ourand; recitation, Miss Rose Hughes: so- prano solo, Miss Edna Doe, and an Indian elvb drill, by Miss Richie McLean. Re- freshments were afterward served. —— Columbia Heights Improvement. A committee from the Columbia Heights Citizens’ Association, consisting of Messrs. M. A. Ballinger and George Simmons, ap- peared before the Commissioners yester- day to urge the immediate expenditure of the appropriation for the section they rep- resent. Major Powell assured the gentle- men that as soon as the money became available the engineer department would take the matter up, and by fall would make the improvements sought. —— Se AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c Todny.
