Two-Thirds Dig in Summer of Bowel Disorders. The Scourge of Infants Under Five Years. Why Lactated Food Is a Sure Preventive. It Makes Weaning in Summer an Easy Undertaking. ‘The first five years of every baby’s life is only a sort of probation. Insurance companies refuse to take the risk of their living, and no one will be surprised who counts the funerals with the white hearse that sadden the streets of every city und village throughout -the sumuner. Half the deaths in June are those of children under five years. A third of all who die every year are Infants. If every one of the childrsn who succumbed to intestinal diseases had been fed on a diet of pure lactated food there would have been no fatal chol- era infantum. The following words from Dr. A. P, Grinnell, the dean of the medical faculty of the University of Vermont, should sink deep into the heart of every mother who ts worked and sad- Gened as the hot days and nights bezin to show thelr debilita*ing effect on baby's cating, sleeping and growing: “After using lactated food for five veare in cases children suffering from cholera {nfantum, and in debilitating or wasting diseases, during which time ft has never failed me, I bove pleasure ip calling the xttention of physicians to it, and in recommend- tug-{ts use.” ‘There ‘is nothing equal to lactated food to take the place of mother's milk. It Is made for the express purpose of forming a perfece substitute for healthy mother’s milk, as analysis will show. Children who are not eating well take Iactated food wittout the need of coax- ing. “Baby must not stop eating heartily when hot werther comes. Loss of strength is more danger- cus at euch times than any other. ‘The danger lics in the child's food proving indi- gestible, clogsing and irritating, and Que inviting diarrhea snd cholera infantum.” For these reasons mothers and physictans find lactated food so neces- sary and so satisfacto ‘The marvelous success of this food in keeping growing during the most Jance at its thoughtful composition. SNevure's food for babies, the mother’s milk, bas been the model. The principal element of jt inlik ts sugar of milk. ‘This 1s the basis of lactated food. With it are combined the nutritious ele- menis of the great cereals, wheat, oats and bar- 30 prepared ax to be readily digested and as- tated. The addition of the salts found in 's milk makes lactated food a perfect sub- stitute. Many a mother, too, has been strenzthencd by vsing It. It makes nursing easy by providing an abundance of rich breast milk. ‘Taousands of infants whose mothers bave been sickly have thrived and grown to be strong chil- dren upon lactated food, which {3 a8 pure and health-civing as the air’ among the hills of the Green Mountain State where 1 de. Joyce was for nine years in charge of Fort Washington, where his geniality and courtesy won the regard of all visitors to the fort. He was retired from the army a few years ago under the thirty years’ act. He served through the war, both as an enlisted man and commissioned officer. He was on the Star of the West expedi- tion sent to relieve Fort Sumter, and was an officer in command of regulars at New York during the riots. He had been ill for only a few months.
