8 THE EVENING STAR, FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 1 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. FRIDAY. -June 1896. itor. cCRosBY NOYES. STAR has a regular and permanent Family Circulation much more than three times as large as that of any other paper, morning or evening, published in Washin, ton. As a News and Advertising Medinm it has ne competitor. THY EVENING void delays, on ac: count ersonnl absence, letters to THE STAR should not be addressed to any individaal coanected with the efice, but simply to THE STAR, or to Euliterizl or Business Depart- ments, necording to tenor or purpose. The republicans will have lost some of their western strength, and unless this is made up to them in some way, will not the cause of scund money be put in peril at the polls? Can it be made up to them in any way but by the coming of eastern democrats to their support? It is suggested in some quurt2rs that no ezstern democrat can support the nominee of the St. Louis convention unless he stands on a straightout gold platform. That is to say, the St. Louis platform must de- care as unequivocally for gold as the Chi- cago platform for silver. It is doubted if condition is met at St. Lous. Scme very prominent republican leaders are pre- dicting and advocating a bimetallic deliv- erance, conditioned on international agree- ment, as meeting not only the emergen- ces of the case but the record of the party. They think, too, that such a deliv- erance, as opposed to one demanding the free coinage of silver by this country with- out regard to the action of other nations, should receive the support of every sound money man in the country. The sound money men are primarily against free sil- yer as an independent policy to be adopted by this country, and the defeat of ihe i- caso nominee would defeat that policy. Then, as is pointed out, the sound money men having the game in their own hands, could go to work to put the currency laws of the country into a more satisfactory shape without hurt to the country’s credit. ——_ + «- — Commission Should Do. Congress having required the Ford Thea- ter comnission to report once more upon the cases of the eleven persons whose ap- proved cliims for damages have been up- set by what now appears to be offictal meanness and malice, the commission should not be satisfied with a perfunctory re-kearing. In view of the discourtesy shown the commission by the House of end by the officials di- rectly respunsiule for the assault, the com- mission owes it to f that m gs the subject more deeply than it yet has one, In addition to re-examining the’ disputed cases, the commission might .very properly seek to ascertain the inspiration and motive of the alleged new evidence forced upon its consideration. It is a noteworthy fact that nearly all of the What the nto employes of the Record and Pension Of- fice who testified adversely to their chief at the inquest which followed the er are no longer in government employ, Seeded sesendontontendententeenendenerdongeendendenterdontententenconcenconceneeteences Sreseesendon ‘Short Pants Suits :Short Pants Suits Short Pants Suits 896—SIXTEEN PAGES. Yourg Mrs. Tocker looked rather appr hensive a3 she watched the frown gather ever her husbard’s brow while he read the rewspaper. He crumpled it and threw it on the floor, and exclaimed: “What we want is silver!” “Oh, I hardly think that we could stand it in the present condition of our affairs,” she replied. Her husband glared at her, and said: “You don’t mean to say that you want nothing but gold!” “Oh, no indeed. I don’t want anything @s expensive even as silver. We can get along very nicely with quadruple plate which looks just as well and wears just as long. And nobody is going to know the difference unless some one is so impolite as to hold the table ware up and look at the bottom.” Diminative. “I understand,” remarked the casual observer, “that there are a great many theatrical stars this season.” replied the song-and-dance gentle- man. “An’ it's a good deal like it is in de real tiug.
