Judge Cole stated to a Star reporter to- day, in referring to the charges filed with Chief Justice Bingham of the District Su- preme Court against Warden Leonard of the District jail, reported in yesterday's Star, that he did not know whether there will be an investigation by the court or net. The chief justice has referred the charges to him for an opinion as to whether or not there shall be an investigation, but he had not had an opportunity to read them. Therefore he could not say whether the charges do or do not justify an inves- tigation. The charges, said to have been filed by Raymond Cook, son of the Rev. Charles O. Cook of Fletcher Chapel, it is understood, are signed by Thomas Parker, Anna Lecker, Sadie Burton, Eliza Gan sie nks, James Peake aud Albert Peacock, the latter having formerly been a guard at the jail. The other parties, it is claimed, are either discharged prisoners or prisoners now at the jail. It is complained that intoxicating liquors have been kept in the prison and also d into the jail. Visiting between male and female prisoners is charged to have been allowed, and it ts also charged that undue intimacy existed between fe- prisoners and male officials of the Maud Lilley, the young white woman there for bigamy, being one of Jail, Aaa Sees female prisoners, ft is claimed wt is understood that Warden Leonard not only denies each and every charge, but is also anxious that the charges be fully investigated by the court. While an investigation has not t been finaily determined upon by the court, it is under- stood that one will shortly follow. It was said at the city hall today that several members of Congress have joined in the demand for an investigation. Bilis Crawford Threw Hix Wife Out fa Window. There as war in Springmann’s alley southwest last night, and Bilis Crawford, colored, who, it is charged, threw his wife cut of a second-story window, had to be jiven a dose of heroic treatment by Po- liceman Evans, who arrested him. Craw- ford, who was under the influence of liquor, went home early in the evening and en- gaged in a dispute with his wife about 10 certs, The result was, so it is alleged, that threw his wife from the window to the z pavement below, and she was when picked up and sent to Emergency Hospital. The husband could not be found for a when he was located he iceman Evans that he did not intend to go with him. Locking the door he thought he would have an opportunity to inflict some injury on the officer, but the latter was too much for him, and Crawford soon found himself the victim of treatm smewhat of the nature of the injury w minutes, and announced to Po- he charged to have inflicted on his wife. w: ‘Then -he was ready to go without further trouble, and now he ts in Jail awaiting the reeult of his wife's injuries ie Cooper and 2€1 Cook, colore: th W om last night, no ult of Cooper's ars that when Ccok went home Cooper and a female companion is house, and he ordered them out. per said he had been there before so he declined to The result was with other wome leave without that the all cut Cook about the head and should: hicting ugly wounds.
