THE THIRD TERM What Senator Jones of Arkansas Says on the Question. THE SOUTH WOULD OPPOSE ANY MAN Sound Money Democrats Disturbed About the Kentucky Situation. COURAGE OF SILVER MEN ‘The sound money demacrats are some- what disturbed over the Kentucky situa- tion, Their information is that the silver men are making a very active canvass of the ctate and are in a decidedly confident mood. There has been an appeal to Mr. Carlisle to take the stump again, and he would promptly have responded but for the necessity of remaining here to prepare his testimony in the bond investigation proceed- ing. He may go later, and if he should he will probably speak in several of the prin- cipal towns. Silver Men Have Plucked Up Courage. ‘The silver men in the blue grass countr have plucked up fresh courage as the re- sult of silver successes in neighboring sil- ver strongholds. Tennessee, Missouri, Ala- bama and Arkansas have all declared for free coinage. Virginia and North Carolina are certain to follow suit. Iinols and In- diana are claimef by that side, and Ohio i: at least to be stubbornly contested by the friends of silver. Surrounded thus by an enemy flushed with triumph, the sound moacy democrats in Kentucky have a col- ossal job on hand. Mr. Carlisle is a strong man at home, despite the history he made in the Blackburn contest. would be stronger if he were an avowed candidaie for the Chicago nomination, for then the pride would enter more largely into the question. But even as the a stands, he commands the rent yarty in Kentucky to a greater de : and his friends ches from him matter of state of hi gree than any other man, believe that half a dozen delivered prior to the m: onven- tions, which are to be h sath in- stant, would be highly effective in the sound money cause. : The silver men de:lar their. side icnigan disaster. in the end, prov 2 to put the silver lex elsewhere, and to subj an unusually rigid examination, veloped Mr. Vest as a critic of offic >-t n nd this note ers as active polit expected to sweil Into a chorus, the time national convention i Comment continue: vesting the ful- ure of cither faction, to rally to any one standard for the presidential nomination. The sound money mec im their ce tions are che it with but very little fcanse, and the free ecin- age men are similarly engaged. ‘The tard term looms | but as yet it lacks an authorized spokesman. The democratic party fine field to choose from, iat the platform's the thing.” ‘The ‘Thir Mr. Jones was asked about the third term proposition. “I have no idea what the President's in- tentions are,” he replied. “There is a good deal of talk. One hardly knows what to helieve on the subject. A great many peo- ple have been expecting a deliverance from him, and quite as many people hav that he ought to make one. My own n about the matter is that he could not carry a single southern state. South- ern democrats are opposed to Mr. Clevelanid cn the money question, atid on the third term question they would oppose any man. He would be the weakest man be pecple the party could put up.” ce. ‘TONS BIRTHPLACE, No Arrangements Yet Mad the Dedication of the Monument. Seme surprise fs expressed that no ar- rangements have been made for the dedica- ton of the monument recently erected by the government at Wakefield, Va., to mark the birthplace of Washington. The matter is entirely in the nds of the Secretary of State, under whcse dire a Col. J. M. Wilson of the army arranged for the erec- tion of the monument. The monument was completed and turned over to the govern- ment several weeks ago. Since then it has been inclosed in a high ornamental iron fence to protect it from relic hunters, and a fine lawn has been arranged at the base. Representative Jones of Virginia, in whose district the shaft is located, has been active in his efforts to secure some public recognition of the completion of the monument, hut so far has been unable to induce Secretary Olney to arrange for a formal dedication. It is proposed, if pos- sible, to have the President and cabinet attend the ceremonies and some distin- guished speaker selected to deliver the ad- dress. The distance down the Potoma and the fact that Wakefield is rather inac cessible may prevent a large crowd from attending. The indications now are that the day will be named in a short time, and that the ceremenies will take place some time next month. Cel. Wilson is going to look over the ground next week, and it is possible that some agreement on the sub ject may be reached soon after his return. —— A Mean Man. From Puck.
