From Harper's We While cfvilized people in all the larger American cities have been complaining and lamenting for years over what is known as the theater hat nuisance, the legislature of Ohio has at last set an example to the authorities of all the play-going states by passing a law the purpose of which is to secure an unobstructed view of the stage to every person who occupies a seat in a theater, Custom has ordained that men shail take their hats off in public assem- ilies, but that women may k theirs on, It has never been necessary to make a law suppressing men’s hua’ Any man who kept his hat on in a well-ordered Ameri_ can theater would be held to be dis: and promptly dealt with by the ushei Because custom was competent to regulite inen in the management of their headgear it has been felt tnat it ought to be able to regulate women also, and all cfforts. to abate the obstructive hats of women have heretofore been directed to arouse a strong public sentiment to which all women bow. When the Ohio senators learned that the bill Tound favor in the eyes of women, they passed it with only two dissenting votes.
