This is Georgetown’s only reserva- ticn, and was acquired by general purchase at the time the conduit was laid for sup- plying water to this city. It is the first thing that strikes the eye of the visitor upon entering this place. The hay scales at present are located in the rear of the M street market houses, and this is regard- ed as the best place possible for them. Wagons can drive around either side of the market space and ‘be weighed without blocking up any public highway. At the site of the fountain in frent of Peck Me- mortal Chapel it weuld be different, and also make va unsightly appearance. National ——— The Police Pension Fund. ‘To the Editor of The Evening Star: Will you be kind enough to give a little space in your very valuable paper for a worthy object? It is for the purpose of urging an appropriation for the mainten- ance of the police relief fund. The pension- ers are old men, women end children. The men retired under the law of Congress were rated and promised persions ranging from $3 to $0 per month. Their widows and or- Phans were to receive an allowance, thc women to be awarded $15, $20 or $25 per month. Now this fund is exhausted. Last year Congress appropriated $4,000, which, tegether with $1 per month from each po- liceman, from fines imposed on policemen, for violations of the rules, from stolen and #bandoned property and the proceeds of a ball and excursion given for the benefit of the police fund, amounted to enough in the last year to enable the authorities to pay three-fifths of the pension allowed. Duri last month the pensioners did not receive anything and up to date this month they have not been paid one cent. Now, it does seem as though a proper effort might save these pensions from lapsing. The men pen- sioned have become incapacitated through length of service and exposure, and I be- lieve that if The Star will urge those in authority to action that Congress will make the appropriation. SUBSCRINER FOR THIRTY YEARS. Ridiculing th To the Fdito. of The Ev Yesterday's discussion —_ Metric Syxtem, ping Star: in the House of valid grounds for their opposition, resorted to these tactics of ridiculing the proposed scheme, and thereby drawing the attention of the serlous-minded members from the undeniable merits of the system. Another point was much dwelt on, name- ly, the confusion that would result from the change. I believe that this fear is much overestimated. The writer very dis- tinctly remembers the time when the s tem of measures was changed in his country, from one nearly as complicated as that at present in use here, to the simple metric system. The government at the time pubiished and sold at cost price con- version tables of convenient form and size. Naturally, at first there resulted some con- fusion, but everything settled down to the new order in a remarkably short time. The same experience was gone through with all of the twenty- en countries in which the metric system is now obligatory, and while it is probable that in most of them the peo- ple generally were averse to the change, before it was made, it may safely be assert- ed that not one of them would consent to a return to the old state of affairs. As It is supposed that one of the duties of Congress is to enact laws that will inure to the greatest good for the greatest num- ber, I hope to live to see the day when the metric system is adopted here, and the old, complicated system is relegated to the limbo of “colonial times.” K. —— A Jonadab Celebration. The twentieth anniversary of Centen- nial Council, No. 4, Sons of Jonadab, was celebrated last night in National Rifles’ Armory Hall by a creditable literary and musical program, followed by a dance.
