Johnson will conduct the prayer meeting this evening. Rev. Dr. Dolloway is contemplating build- ing a new residence on Providence street between 13th and 1ith streets. The house of Mr. Firmer Horner on Keo- kuk street, East Brookland, is rapidly go-. ing up. It is probable that after the com- pletion of this building several others will be erected. The citizens of Brookland who showed so much interest in the misfortunes of Mr. and Mrs. Padgett and family have now made known their generosity. A subs-an- tial dining room set, a kitchen stove and a large amount of household linen has been bought and given to Mrs. Padgett. More purchases will be made in a féw days with the remaining money. The citizens wisely appointed a committee to look after this, and much thought and discretion has been shown by those composing it. Prince George’s county receives from the state appropriation of the public school tax for the first quarter of this year, the amounts being payable on and®after March 25: White schools, }2,893.29; colored schools, $1,520.59. September 29 and 30 and October 1 and 2 have heen named as the days for the next agricultural fair to be held here. ———+—- LAUREL. The annual meeting of the Laurel Build- ing and Loan Association occurred last night at the offices of the association in the Post Office building. The old board of directors was re-elected, which consists of the following gentlemen: George W.Waters, John A. Flannery, John H. Morrison, Thos. L. Fairall, Peter L. Slingerland, Charles F. Shaffer, Charles H. Stanley, George W. Lillibridge end William Henry Harri- son. The board subsequently met and re- elected the following officers: President, Charles F. Shaffer; vice president, Charles H. Stanley; secretary, William Henry Har- ison; treasurer, George W. Lillibridge. Secretary Harrison's annual report shows the association to be in an excellent finan- cial condition. Bond, appeared before the senate commit. tee on education, at Annapolis, yesterday and argued in favor of the bill recently introduced by Senator Bowie of this county, and mentioned in The Star, appro- priating $1,200 for the maintenance of a high school here for the pupils who have graduated from the Laurel schools, the schocls in this county, and the other coun- ties of southern Maryland. The bill for the establishment and maintenance of the high school, introduced by Delegate Schooley in the house of delegates, was unfavorably reported, and failed to pass, but it is the belief now that the senate bill will pass, and that the appropriation will be secured. Among those who attended the banquet recently given by Mr. R. E. Anderson, the contractor for the improvement work here, in Baltimore, were: Mayor Edward Pheips, Delegate Schooley, Councilmen Albin Fair- all, John W. Sharswood, H. William Thies, John W. Gray, clerk to the council; City Engineer Frank T. English, Dr. T. M. Baldwin end Mr. B. F. Crabbs. Rev. Dr. A. E. Gibson, pastor of Cen- tenary M. B. Church here, was assigned by the Baltimore Methodist conference yes- terday to Fulton Avenue Church, Balti- more. His successor here will be Rev. Dr. E. D. Huntley. Dr. Gibson has been sta- tioned here for the past year, but in that short time made a large number of friends, who will regret his transfer to Baltimore. At the meeting of the conference held Mon- day Rev. Dr. Gibson was elected president of the Conference Missionary and Exten- sion Society. He was also made president of the Conference Educational Society, with Rev. Dr. D. H. Carroll, also of Laurel, as secretary. The funds of the latter so- ciety are turned over to the Woman’s Col- lege and Dickinson College. Rev. Dr. John Lanahan of Laurel, who is the agent of the Baltimore Book Depository, was elect- ed, on the first ballot, one of the four dele- gates to the general conference, which meets in Cleveland, Ohio,.May 1. Prince George's quarterly proportion of the school tax will be $4,114.18. Of this amount $2,893.29 goes to the white schools and 31,520.89 to the colored. Kephart, is sawing lum- ber south of the town, was attempting to remove a lump of frozen sawdust from be- neath the caw Saturday morning, when his right hand was caught by the saw, and the two middle fingers so severely lacerated that one of them wes taken off; the other was badly injured in the middle joint, but it was thought best not to remove it. A discussion of the following question, “Resolved, That it is not for the interest of the negro to vote solid with the re- publican party,” was held at the colored lyceum at Oak Grove Saturday evening. The discussion was participated in by Messrs. A. T. Shirley, Jas. Jackson and Frank Stuart, favoring the resolution, and Cc. T. Ferguson, Frank Siotts and T. W. Hyson, opposed.
