NOT A BAD PLACE Police Cells Were Better Than Out- doors Today. HENRY EDWARDS MENTALLY WRONG Two Possible Murders Were Pre- vented Yesterday. OTHER POLICE CASES “Deed, nigger, dis ain't no bad place to be a morning like dis when you ain’t got mo good shoes and don't know where de hog and hominy is a comin’ from,” said one eclored prisoner to another just after the arrival of the van at the Police Court. “You’se right "bout dat,” was the re- sponse, “‘cause I knows we’s a goin’ ter get some hot coffee and enough to eat to keep us a goin’, and I don’t know what we'd had out in dis snow storm.” “Two hot coffees this way” was the order shouted through the corridor as the first man of the second batch of prisoners reach- ed the landing. The second coming of the van had been delayed because of the Smoothness of the horses shoes, and the Prisoners fearing the coffee and rolls would run short were in a hurry to get their allowance. “Can't you give a poor, lone fellow a second cup this morning Policeman Flynn was asked by cne of the tramps. “How does it come that you are such a Poor fellow?" the officer asked him. “Well, old spert,”” he said, ‘you see I've been on the road a long time and I've owned more iand than any man in Wash- ington. It’s true I had to scrape it off my shoes for the want of a solid founda- tion, but if I had only had a place to put it I'd been the richest man in the United States. “But,” he concluded, “I'm land poor, and that's the reason I'm here.” Had a Revolver. Josephine Johnson, a colored woman, neatly dressed, was in the toils on a charge of carrying a loaded revolver in Grand Army Hall, at 6th and C streets, last night. The police have considerable trouble with the crowds of colored people at the hall, and last night when Policeman Sullivan was called to the hall Josephine had been relieved of her weapon. Lawyer Peyton defended her, and while he admitted that she had the pistol last night he said she had found it and was going to take it home. Judge Miller questioned the well-dressed woman, and learned that she had a griev- ance against another woman who has been visiting the hall. “I told the woman,” said Josephine, “that if she repeated wnat she said to me I'd hurt her.” “What was the trouble between you and the other girl?” the court inquired. She heard me ask Pink Bowie to go home with me,” responded Josephine, “and she told me what she would do to me if she heard me speak to him again.” Josephine, in her attempt to explain her Possession of the pistol, said she picked it up on Florida avenue between 7th and Sth streets, about 5 o'clock yesterday after- noon, when it was laid in the street by a man who had a fight with his wife. Her first trouble in the hall was Monday night, and’she went home with a friend afterward. ‘She did not return home, but spent the day with a friend, and last night she went to the fair. ‘The first thing she got at the fair was a glass of punch, to “fire-up,” as Judge Miller remarked. “And relieving her of the pis- tol prevented a murder. Later counsel suggested that the case be postponed indefinitely, and that the de- ferdant be released on $200 bond. This, he said, would have a better effect than send- ing her to jail for a few days. By taking this action, counsel said the court would have the defendant under some control, and he thougnt she would then make no effort te put her threats In execution. Judge Miller said he could not adopt the suggestion of counsel. “ff I had my way,” he said I would put ar end to this razor and pistol carrying so quick that there would not be a weapon left in the town. I would inflict severe punishment in each case, but in most cases it means that these people only have J fatten. "ver to the court's inaulrie: id she came here from Massachu- ght years ago and has been em- ployed in the government printing office. She was given three months in jail. Needed a Whipping Post. “This is all prejudy,” said William Con- nor, colored, who pretended that he was a Much-abused husband. “If it is,” said Margaret Connor, the wife, “he treated me like a dog.” Taere was trouble between them, the result of a di: about 93 cents. This amount ef money nad’ been hid in the house and the hushand found it. “When I found the money and started out of the house,” he said, “my wife grab- bed me and we had a fight. “How did her arm get hurt “It's only sprained,” he answered, “and I guess she hurt it when she fell down in the house.” “It's worse than hurt,” said Margaret, “because I had to go to the hospital Catherine Contee, hi ister-in-law, also entered complaint agai him. He had struck her in the mouth with his fist. “For what?” “Because I took my sister's part.” “Connor,” said the court, “does your wife take in washing?” “Yes, sir.” I'd like to have a whipping post here for about twenty minutes,” remarked the court; “then I'd know what to do with you.” He was given seventy days in jail. Mentally Wrong. Emma Edwards, eighteen years old, has been married one year, and today she ap- peared and made complaint against Henry Edwards, her husband, who is more than fifty years old. Jose- “Last night he imagined I was his daughte: she said, “‘and struck me on the head.” “Are you his wife?” i am. “Second wife?” “Third.” She said that he had been under treat- ment in Providence Hospital for three weeks, and he kad been discharged as physically cured, but mentally wrong. “He gave so much trouble in the hospi- tal,” she said, “that they would keep him no longer. When the trouble occurred he sald to me. ‘You are Celia Beasley, my daughter, and I'm going to strike and kill Sou” Did he hurt you?” “Yes, sir; I fainted when he struck me.” “Does he drink?” “Three pints a day.” She told the court that she had means of her own, and was willing to care for her husband, who had treated her kindly until Ris mind became affected. She had nursed him when he was sick, and had carried him in her arms, but when he kicked and injured her she could do it no longer” be- cause of physical disability. Edwards, who came here several years ago from North Carolina, and has kept a restaurant on 7th street, said he had the grip. and his memory was not good. Judge Miller was satisfied that the pris- oner wos in need of treatment, and ordered that an examination be made. This examination was made by Dr. Fow- ler of the health office, and now Edwards eae ee sent to St. Elizabeth’s for treat- men! Collateral Forfeited. James Gleasen, a blacksmith, and Chas. King, a contractor, who have had some disagreement about business matters, had trouble twice yesterday, and the second time Policeman Payne arrested Gleason on @ charge of carrying concealed weapons. When they met yesterday morning and engaged in a war of words, Gleason, it is charged, drew a broken pisto! and used it for the purpose of frightening King. Later in the day he returned with a gen- wine weapon filled with bullets, but Poiice- tan Payne appeared before it was used, and relieved him of it. This was done before any blows had eased or there had been any attempt tc THE EVENING STAR, WEDNESDAY, MAROH 11, 1896~TWELVE PAGES. het, Gestine hearing in court today, ie " Gleason did not respond when the case was called, and his collateral was forfeited. Other Cases. Three colored boys, William Nelson, Jos. Fogus and John Middleton, stole seven Pigeons belonging to George Lewis, and they were fined $10 each. Judge Kimball heard a charge of vagrancy against Richard Brown, who is only sixteen years old. : “He was begging on the streets,” was tht complaint of the officer, “‘and_when I ar- rested him he said he lived in Hagerstown, where his father keeps a store.” “I live in New York,” said the boy, “and I'm sixteen years old. I’ve been as far south as Charleston and Atlanta, and now I’m on my way home.” “Where do your parents live?” “At 49th street and 9th avenue.” “Do they know where you are?” “No, siz.” The boy said he had been on the road for four months, and_he was satisfied to con- tinue over the road and on freights, and not anxious to be given transportation. He was sent down for five days. Edward Williams, colored, was given a trial on a charge of having ill-treated Annie Williams, his better-half. “He's been beating me all the time,” she said. “I stood it as long as I could, and then I had him arrested.” Edward had been sentenced to jail for keeping a disorderly house and crap-shoot- ing, and the court accepted his personal bonds in the assault case. ——__ Denth of an Aged Actor. Henry H. Howe, the aged actor, who came to this country with Henry Irving, was four-d dead in his apartments at the Bernet House, in Cincinnati Monday night. Mr. Howe was eighty-three years old. He played the Duke in “The Merchant of Ven- ice,” the Farmer in “The Bells’ and an- other old man part in “The Lyons Mail.” His impersonation of these parts was al- ways artistic. He had played on the stage more than sixty years and had appeared with every English star of note. In his boyhood days he had seen Edmund Kean and retained vivid recollections of his act- ing. tee.
