The water in the Anacostia river was Yower vesterday than it hed been for many years, and there was little to be seen out- side of the channel. The Chris- tian Endeavor and Epworth League socie- ties united with the Loyalist Society of the church in the evening services, and an interesting program was rendered. The Music on the occasion was of a fine order, and was led by Prof. Hezekiah Trail and Mr. James Thompson. Excellent papers were read by Misses Lizzie Haney and Eulalie Braddock. A fine address on “Con- secretion” was delivered by Mr. Chas. W. Ness of Baltimore. Much Interest is manifested here over the ro} le action of the Maryland legis- lature on the new assessment bills now be- fore that body, and the hope !s expressed that some provision may be made for the taxation of the large amount of personal Froperty in the county and state that has heretofore escaped that burden. So far as the taxation of mortgages is concerned there seems to be some diversity of opinion. The present very unequal assessment of real stato in all parts of the county is something that calls loud for a remedy. —— BROOKLAND. ‘The Ladies’ Ald Society of the Methodist Church met last night. Efforts to Confirm the Report of His Discovery. Major General Svotliteky, the governor of Irkutsk, has telegraphed to St. Petersburg. in reply to queries regarding the reports as to Dr. Nansen’s return that Peter Ivan- owitch Kuchrareff, who trades at Ust Yansk, under date of November 10, wrote to the merchant Kuchnareff at Yakutsk as follows: “We learn that Dr. Nansen has reached the pole, has disccvered hitherto unknown land, and has now returned. Consequent- ee Arctic ocean has now been explor- Goverror Svotlitsky adds that there is no confirmation of this news from other sources, but he has instructed a member of his administration in the Verhoyansk district to proceed to Ust Yansk to verify the news, and to aid the expedition, if necessary. Points Cleared Up. The dispatch will serve to clear up sev- eral points in the report that first came of Dr. Nansen’s return. The fact of there having been two Kuchnareffs involved in transmitting the first report led to some confusion, and to doubt as to the report having been received from a reliable source. It was pointed out that if the report came from the merchant Kuchnareff in Yakutsk there would be ro ground for regarding it of special importence, as he would have no special facilities for getting news at first hand of Dr. Nansen’s return. But the dispatch asserts that the news came to Kuchnareff of Yakutsk from _the,| trader, Pecer Ivanowitch Kuchnareff. Now Peter Ivanowitch Kuchnareff is the ac- credited agent of Dr. Nansen, and has been intrusted with a supply of Eskimo dogs for his expedition. His trading post at Ust Yansk is on the Arctic ocean at the mouth of the Yana river, just south of Liskov Island, one of the New Siberians, = less than 200 miles east of the Lena elta. Beyond the fact that the date of the trader Kuchnareff’s letter is fixed at No- vember 10, there is little additional infor- mation in the dispatch from the governor of Irkutsk over that contained in the dis- patch bringing the first report in February. ———— e+ More Power for Mayor Hooper. The bill recently introduced in the Mary- land senate by President Bruce, providing for the removal of the Baltimore council's Tight of rejecting or confirming the mayor’s appointments, was passed by 15 to 5 by the senate yesterday. The bill invests the mayor with the power of ail appointments with the exception of the city register and his clerks. All the demo- crats voted for the bill, and its republican opponents were Senators Day, Emory, Nor- wood, Sloan and Wilkinson. Brilliant Scene in Rome.
