Taylor, who @ied sudderly late Monday night, at her home on Monroe street, took place yester- day afternoon. The services were conduct- ed by Rev. James McLaren, pastor of the Anacostia M. E. A number of petitions have been sent ta the general assembly of Maryland from Hyattstown, asking that body not to repeal the existing law prohibiting the sale of in- toxicating Mquor near that town. Hyatts- town is situated very near the Frederick county line, and that county has not adopted the local option law, which is in force in Montgomery. A house and lot at Cedar Grove, the propery of Mrs. Ida Riggs, have been sold to Mr. Wm. Inglehart for $600. A pleasant entertainment was given on Monday night at the residence of Mrs. Fer- ris for the benefit of the infant depart- ment of the Baptist Sunday school. Mr. James W. Fling, who was badly in- jured a week ago by falling under the wheels of a moving traction engine on the road between Derwood and Redland, and who afterward was taken to Garfield Hospital, Washington, for treatment, died suddenly at that institution on Wednes- day afternoon. Upon his arrival there it was found necessary to amputate one of his legs between the foot and knee, and after the operation he seemed to be doing finely until Wednesday, when he suddenly lost consciousness and was dead in a few minutes. His wife had on that day left their home at Derwcod to visit the sufferer, hoping to find him better, but when she arrived at the hospital he had been dead about five minutes. His funeral took place today at 3 p.m., with interment at Forest Glen. A very enjoyable evening was recently spent by the teachers and pupils of the Comus School, the occasion being the reg- ular reception given to the friends and pa- trons of that institution. A fine program had been arranged for the occasion, which was rendered as follows: Quotations by the school; recitations by first, second, third and fourth grades; music by Glee Club; dialogue, Mary Emmert and Jessie Ce recitations by fifth and sixth grades; dia- logue by four boys; music by Glee Club; original essay, A. T. Johnson; recitations by seventh, eighth and ninth grades; exer- cises in geometry. The closing exercises were by the senior spelling class, and were of such a character as to denote great effi- elency. Rev. Dr. Sampson of Washington will preach-in the Presbyterian Church Sunday Next at 11 a.m. Tuesday evening next a union praise and prayer meeting will be held in the same church. Burden Bearer Circle of the King’s Daughters will hold a meeting on Tuesday afternoon at the residence of Rev. L. R. Milbourne. Mr. Leon Dessez will soon move from Chevy Chase to West Eckington. Mr. Joseph Hermandez, a student of the Catholie Unjversity, has with him, at the residence of Mrs. Carmick, his brother, Mr. Hermandez of Cuba. Mr. Austin Gray of Washington has taken possession of the Geo. B. Johnston cottage on Dover street. Mr. and Mrs. Wolfe have as their guests Mr. and Mrs. Nicodemus of Hagerstown. Mr. and Mrs. Gregory have moved into the Rheinmuth cottage of West Brookland. Mr. D. T. Troup of Hagerstown was a re- cent visitor to Brookland. Mr. Robert Ridgeway and son Anderson are still in Florida, where they have been having a most delightful time. Mr. Ridge- way will not return to Brookland until April. Mr. William R. Bailey: will very shortly break ground for a new house for Mr. Fir- man R. Horner, on Milwaukee street, East Brookland, adjoining the residence of Mr. William Quinn. Mr. and Mrs. Clark and family have taken possession of their cottage on 14th street. a Iams Dies of His Wounds. William H. Iams, who gained such noto- riety as a member of the Pennsylvania militia during the Homestead labor riots, in 1892, died in the Maryland Hospital at Bal- timore yesterday afternoon from the effects of a pistol wound inflicted by Charles Arndt several days ago. Iams had been employed as a bartender in Baltimore for several weeks and he and Arndt boarded together. They quarreled while lams was under the influence of liquor, and Arndt shot him in the abdomen while acting in self-defense. Jams’ wound was considered mortal from the first, but Arndt was discharged from custody, there being no evidence against ———_+e-__ Fighting the Mayor, The relations between the mayor and the council of Baltimore have been growing more and more strained ever since Mayor Hooper showed a decided tendency to make appointments without reference to party service and even without reference to poll- tics at all. Last night open war broke out.
