SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA. ‘The Aunt Matilda Dramatic Club gave an entertainment last evening at Masonic Hall for the benefit of St. Teresa’s Church. ‘There was a large attendance. Those who took pert were Miss Jennie Bartley, Miss Janie Bean, Miss Annie Green, Miss Kath- arine Rhodes and Miss Marie Green, and Messrs. Simeon Harrison, Raymond J. Beran, Dennis A. O’Brien, Albert E. Smith, Thomas W. Smith, Ignatius T. Byrne, Will- fam Watsor and George Bean. Mr. Gilbert Gannon was musical director. The pound party held Monday evening at Masonic Hall, under the auspices of the Woman's Relief Corps, auxiliary to John A. Logan Post, G. A. R., was a great suc- cess, the contributions being very liberal. The measles are playing havee with the attendance at the public schools in Hills- daie. —— BOYDS. The young ladies and gentlemen of Poolesville, Montgomery ccunty, a young amateur company, gave a play at Boyds’ Hall Monday night for the benefit of the new hall at Poolgsville. The following la- dies and gentlemen took part: Messrs, Horace Davis, Walter Williams, Norman Wootton, Frank Williams and Misses Car- fams, Ella Poole and Dora Hall of Poolesville, and Messrs. Geo. Remsburg and Duvall Chambers of Adamstown, Fred- erick county. Miss Della Emerson of Boyds is visiting relatives in Alexandria, Va. Mr. Mrs. Geo. F. Pollock of Boyds have moved to Washington. Mrs. B. Ridencur, who was stricken down with paralysis about a month ago, is rapidly improving. ———_—_. HYATTSVILLE. ‘An interesting meeting of the Tuesday Club was held last night at the residence of the Misses Schoepf. Shakespeare's play of “King Lear’ was the topic for discus- sion. Quotations from the play were siven at the call of roll. A vocal solo was ren- dered by a quartet, consisting of Mrs. J. A. Aman and Messrs. Drown, Freston and ‘Lewis Holden. Mrs. L. H. Campbell read an essay on the play of “King Lear.” A trio, composed of Messrs. Preston, Drown and Lewis Holden, sang a comic song, which was highly amusing. Dr. J. R. Owens read an excellent essay on “Shake- speare’s Focls.” A series of tableaux, representing King Lear discarding Cor dela, K Lear in the storm and the death sc in King Lear, were presented by Messrs. W. A. Giusta and J. B. Burn- side, Mrs. W. I. Smith and Misses Mae ‘Tricou and Edith Walbridge. Mra. Lewis Holden recited “Mammie’s Little Baby Boy.” The next meeting of the club will be held at the residence ef Mrs. J. H. The musicale and tea, given by the ladies ef St. Anthony's Church at Mrs. Lewis Jelliens lest right, was a great success. The tables were artistically arranged, one being decorated in red and one in yellow. The many lamps with their pretty shades of various colors cast a charming giow over the well-set tables, around which the young Jadies hovered in delicate gowns. Every available space was occupied, and merry chatter and laughter echoed from every ccrner. Rev. Father De Wulf, the pastor of the church, and Rev. Dr. H. Hyvernat were present. The musical part of the evening Was greatly enjoyed. There was a duet by Katle Lay Howe, banjo, and Marie Howe, Piano, and vocal solos by Miss Mary Page, Miss Bertha Johnson and Mr. M. Page. Mr. Walter Harvey played several violin selec- tions, with Miss Emly Howlett and Miss Addie Jullien as piano accompanists, and Miss Katie Howe, banjoist. There was also a_vocal solo by Mary Weidman, and Miss Emily Howlett charmed all with her diffi- cult piano solos. The participants in the Program were loudiy applauded, and in every case were obliged to respond to an encore. The supper table was well pa- tronized, as also was the candy table, which was presided over by Miss Alma Noyes. It is probable that a good sum was realized. The Brookland school is making prepara- tions for the exercises to be held in honor of Washington's birthday. There will take Place Friday, and the town hall has been secured for this purpose, so that all the schools may be brought together, and at the same time the parents and friends may have the opportunity of enjoying the pro- gram. The exerc'ses will be in the after- noon, commencing about 1:30. Readings, recitations and songs will comprise the ‘work of the school, while the addresses by Mr. Chas. G. Lynch and Dr. Frank T. She new Catholic church is progressing rapidly. Much work has been done since the laying of the corner stone on the 9th instant. It is understood that a meeting of citizens will be held in the Town Hall tonight to listen to the report of the committee, ap- pointed to confer with the Eckington Citi- zer:? Association in régard to the inade- quate transportation furnished by the Eck- ington railway. The matter is one that af- fects this entire community, and those who projected the mass meeting say that it is too important for simply an association to act upon. The ladies of St. Mary’s Catholic Church held a festival and bazaar at the Opera House, this place, Monday evening, which was largely attended and was a pronounced success in all particulars. The several booths and tables for the sale of refresh- ments and fancy articles were arranged around the large hall and decorated with handsomely shaded parlor lamps, flowers and evergreens. In addition there was a long supper table h:avily laden with all the delicacies of the season, to which am- ple justice was done by those in attend- ance. The booth in which fancy articles was sold was presided over by Miss Mollie Maddox, assisted by Misses Kate Clagett, Ida Offutt and Rosa Day. The candy table was in charge of Miss Rose Wagner, who was assisted by Misses Jennie Bailey and Lillie Davis. The cake table was in charge of Miss Louie Poss, assisted by Mrs. Bell and Miss Mamie Mattack. The ice cream table was presided over by Miss Agnes I. Mattack, assisted by Mrs. W. E. Morgan, Mrs. Frank Kabbitt and Miss Rhoda Poss. ‘The supper table was in charge of Mrs. Wm. G. Robertson and Mrs. Wagner, as- sisted by Miss Janie Bailey, as cashier, Mrs. Levin Offutt and Misses Marie Robertson and Mary Granger. Fine music cnlivened the occasion and dancing was indulged in. In the circuit court for this county in the case of Wm. W. McCullough, assignee of Wm. O. Shaw, agt. Alfred Reynolds and Louisa N. Reynolds to enforce a mechan- ic’s hen, the court has filed an opinion and order dismissing the bill. All the parties to the suit are residents of Washington. The meeting of the county commiss:on- ers, held Tuesday, was not as largely at- tended as usual, but conside:able routine business was transacted. Church yester- day at 3 p.m. to witness the marriage*of Miss Mary Adelaide Waters of Takoma and Mr. Wm. J. Giddings of Washington. The ushers were Mr. Hempstone Giddings of Leesburg, Va., brother of the groom; Mr. Walter Waters, brother of the bride; Mr. Robt. L. Waters, Mr. Fred. A most enthusiastic gathering cf Takoma residents, including a number of ladies, were present in the chapel Saturday night at the special session of the town coun- cil, called for the purpose of receiving the report of the ord'nance committee relative to granting the right of way to the Wash- ington and Baltimore Transit Company. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Sheed, with every member present. The report was presented and discussed, after. which, upon an invitation to any present desirous of making any remarks, Messrs. Holt, Heaton, Maj. O'Driscoll and Kinnear spoke briefly in the interests of the bill, which was passed. Arrangements have been made between the postal administrations of the United States and Canada for a change in diatri- bution schemes for several of the registry mail exchanges between the two countries, caused by the addition of two new ex- changes, of registered pouches to be locked with the international rotary lock, and to be operated under the system of hand-to- hand receipts. ‘The new exchanges ate: Malone, N. Y¥., and Montreal and Utica and Montreal.
