PLOTTED WHOLESALE ™ John Koehler Wanted His Wife and Z Family Killed. John Koehier is in jail in Chicago accused of attempting to have an assassin kill his entire family. The alleged plot, it is claim- ed, was frustrated by three men. These are Join Meade, a miner of West Superior, Wis., a tramp by force of circumstances; Capt. Schuettler of the Sheffield avenue po- lice station, and Detective Baumer of the same station, who disguised himself as a tramp, and, it is said, was hired to commit murder. Koehler broke down when arrested, and was so limp that officers had to carry him to a patrol Wagon. He fs an Alsatian, for- ty-two years old, and has amassed a small fortune in Chicago, where he has lived for {fteen years. Four months ago he married Mrs. ike Tuebbecke, who had, be- sides a handsome face and form, a four- story brick house on Clybourn avenue, from which she derived a snug income by taking in_ boarders. Despite these things the widow brought suit for $10,900 damages for breach of prom- ise before Koehler married her. The suit Was begun last summer. When at last the ceremony was performed, the wife, it is said, had the whip hand, and enforced as a condition of the union that in case of death of either their combined property. should revert to the survivor. The affections of the couple began to cool soon after marriage, and it was not a month before quarrels were frequent. Three young children of the wife, by her first husband, were the cause of many of the aifficulties. The many disputes finally led to a separation, and,, it is charged, then the plot to murder the woman and the children followed. ————-+ee-_____ ‘Tailors Elect Officers. Many Entertainments Successful Have Been Given by It and An- other is Announced. One of the most popular organizations in this city is the Comus Club, which is com- pesed of residents of the northwest portion of the city. It was first organized in Sep- tember of 18 when it was given the name of the “Mizpah” Ciub. During the spring of the next year, however, the name was } changed by vote to Comus, as the former appellation was concluded to be inappro- priate. The club was organized from a number who were in the habit of making up picnic parties and excursions into the country during the summer, the object being to provide amusement during the winter months. The membership is limited to thirty, the meetings being held from Octo- ber to May on every other Wednesday night. The objects of the club being essen- tially social in character, the evenings are taken up in card playing and like forms of amusement, although some excellent music- al programs have been rendered at the various meetings. The membership in- cludes rome well-known musicians and lit- crary people of the city, and these are al- Ways uble to fill out an excelient program at_every meeting. The officers of th @ club at the present time are Mr. William H. Conley, presilents Dr. J. 5. Bliss, vice president; Miss Flora ML Gibson, secretary, and Mr, Alexander Scott, treasurer. The execu ‘€ committee consists of Mr. Geo. Gibson, Mr. ShermaA B. Fowler, Mrs. H. C. Browning and M Julia Seaman, An annual entertainment has been given by the club each year since its organiza. tion, and through these it has gained its reputation. Its first attempt was-a min. strel show, given at the residence of Mr Geo. Gibson on Rhode Island avenue. 1i was a distinct success, and since that time its entertainments have been looked fot. ward to with ereat expectations. Shortly after the minstrel performance the club Produced the operetta of “Il Jacobi,” the members of the club taking the different characters. Last spring another compii- mentary musicale and the operetia. of ‘Penelop "* were given at Scottish Rite Hall. There entertainmeats have all been complimentary to the members of the club, The mirstrel performance was given un. der the name of Conley ard Fowler's “Ka- zoo Minstrels.” An idea of the enjoyment of the occasion can be had when the fol lowing directions are quoted from the first page of the program: “Expressions of ap- preciation will be delivered as foli Flowers can be handcd over the feet ligh vegetables are to be delivered at the cellar door; friends with donatioas of eges must take distant seats In the gallery, and as the gallery is not yet compicied the curd stone will have to be used instead.
