SUBURBAN NEW ANACOSTIA, Complaint was yesterday made at the Acacostia substation that a gang of thieves 4g operating on quite an extensive scale in the southeastern part of the District and the adjacent portions of Prince George's county, Md., and the aid of the police au- thorities was invoked to see if the mis- creants cannot be brought, to justice. A few nights ago the stable of Mr. Geo. Mayhew, living near Centerville, was breken into and a valuable horse stolen. Subsequent investigation revealed that the animal had been sold to Mr. William Cun- ningham, but he having doubts that the boy offering to sell the horse had a right to dispose of the animal, ard wishing, if the horse had been obtained In an unlawful manner, to do what he could to restore the preperty to the rightful owner, gave the yy, while agreeing to pay $30 for the horse, a note payable in one week. From a description of the boy given by Mr. Cunningham, some of the farmers who have interested themselves in trying to run duwn what they belleve to be a gang arrested a party who said his name is Carroll Poland, and {t is said that he has admitted that he got Mr. Mayhew’s horse, but claimed that he found it running at large. Poland was kept at the house of one of his captors last night, and will be taken to Upper Marlboro’ today. The boy says his home Is in Louaoun county, Va. A few days previous to the theft of Mr. Mayhew’s horse the stable of Mr. William Lloyd of Annandale was broken open and horse, bridle and blanket were stolen. ther losses have also been reported, and @s no trace has been found of the stolen Property, it is supposed that the articles taken have been disposed of in Virginia. An attempt was also made Sunday night to break open the stable of Mr. Richard Leapley at Forestville, but owing to the Fiatchfulness of the dogs,it was not success- ul. The disease from which Mr. W. T. Mills 1s suffering having assumed a dropsical form, it was deemed advisable to have him moved to Garfield Hospital, where he can be under the constant care of his physt- clans, and also have the benefit of trained pursing. The young people of the Christian En- deavor Society will hold their prayer meet- ing at the residence of Mrs. C. A. Baker next Thursday evening at 8 o'clock. Friday evening the Misses Shallenberger, at the Keform School, entertained the Hy- attsville Junicr Progressive Euchre Club. After the game refreshmerts were served, and dancing indulged in until a late hour. The handsome prizes were won as follows: First lady's prize, Miss Lolo Tricou; second lady's prize, Miss A. Louise Fuller; first gentleman’s prize, Mr. Louis Richardson, and second gentlemen's prize, Mr. Harry Dorsey. Tubbs and Ar- nold of Anacostia. Considerable excitement was caused in Langdon Saturday morning by one of the valuable horses owned by Mr. I. J. Baker failing in the cistern near his barn. But for the timely assistance of the neighbors. and some workmen, who were unloading ceal cars at the station ne&arby, the horse would have drowned. He was in the water fully an hour, as the men were obliged to dig through an embankment into the cis- tern to reach him. A meeting of the town council was held last night, with Mayor Payne presiding. A communication was received from the village improvement society, requesting the corncil not to make a change in the name of Forbes street, and by a vote of six to one it was decided to make no change. Councilman Gould offered a resolution re- questing J. E. Willard, the representative in the legislature, to withdraw the amend- ed charter from the calendar of the house of delegates if the mile limit in regard to the sale of intoxicating liquor was to be endangered. This was adopted. The Matter of cutting the hedge along the sidewalk on Washington street, called to the attention of the council by Messrs. Merrifield and Rorebeck of the Village Improvement Society, was referred to the street committee, with power to act. Mr. Rorebeck asked that the sidewalk. to the Episcopal Church be repaired, which was referred to the street committee of the first ward. Mr. M. E. Church, from the cemmittee on survey and plat of the town, reported the work completed and turned the map of the town over to the council. Councitman Lynch was appointed to in- quire into the cost of iron wheelbarrows and make necessary purchase. A grie’ ance of Mr. Van Horn in regard to the Jocating of the stone crusher on lot ad- jacent to him was referred to Mr. M. E. Church, as the committee obtained the consent of Mr. Church for its location. On motion of Councilman De Putron the ordinance in reference to license tax on dogs wax amended to conform to the char- ter of the town on the subject and the ser- geant given all necessary authority to enforce the provision. Councilman De Putron was appointed a committee to Graft a petition to the county board of Supervisors requesting the board to make of them will present themselves for | an appropriation the new road to Fairfax C. H. A number of bills were audited, and tye council ad- journed to March meeting. Friday night a barn filled with straw on the farm of Mr. M. B. Church, abeut a mile from town, was burned, with all the contents. The fire is suposed to be the work of tramps. Loss, $250. No in- surance. Miss Ida Moreland, who has been visit- ing relatives at Bailey's Cross Roads, has returned home. ‘Ihe_report of the public school teachers for the fourth month of the term, as filed with the clerk of the school board, shows an enrollment for the month of 130 eres with a total average attendance Secretary Olncy has granted a passport to Mr. H. L. Turner and wife to visit sev- eral foreign countries. Mr. and Mrs. Tur- ner are now sojourning at Thomasville, Ga., for the benefit of Mr. Turner's health. Miss Flora Chapman, essisted by Miss Mabel Kerr, led the young people's meet- ing Sunday afternoon. It was a memory meeting and very interesting. De Knight has filed a Dill in equity against the Union Automatic Ma- chine Company and others to prevent an alleged infringement on certain patent rights claimed by him. He states that the 14th of last month he purchased from Ar- thur R. Brown and Edwin C. J. Davis of England, ‘nventors, patent rights for cer- tain new and useful imprgyements in coin- controlled apparatus (slot machine), and it is on those rights Mr. De Knight clatms the defendants are infringing, to his dam- age, he says, to the amount of $50,000. He prays that the defendants be enjoined from making or selling the machine, and that they be required to make an accounting.
