14 x ST. ANTHONY’S CHURCH The Corner Stone Laid With Impressive Ceremonies in Brookland. Cardinal Satolli Officinted and Rev. Dr. O'Gorman Delivered an Elo- quent Address—A Large Crowd. Yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock the .cor- ner stone of St. Anthony's Catholic Church ef Brookland was laid by Cardinal Satolll. Not since the simfiar occasion at the » Catholic University has so large and dis- tinguished an assembly of clergy gathered in this vicinity. Cardinal Satolli was as- sisted by Rev. J. F. McGee of St. Pat- rick’s and Rev. J. F. Mackin of St. Paul's. "The procession was an imposing one, num- bering about 100 clergy, together with dele- gates from the Carroll Institute, St. Vin- cent de Paul Society and the St. Peter Commandery of the Knights of St. John, commanded by J. T. Jennings, and headed by St. Paul's Drum Corps. First the spot Where the altar is to be was blessed, and then the entire ground. After this the stone was lcid in the northeast corner of In it was placed current of The Evening Star and together with a piece of parchment on which was the following inscription: ALPHA X OMEG oriam —cedet rae vertat Summo XII felieiter regnante Eminentissimo Jacobo Card. F cence is stil ervable two meters away from the It is easy to convince ore’s self that the cause of the fluorescence is the discharge apparatus and nothing else. “The most striking feature of this phe- nomenon is that an influence (age dle of exciting brilliant ff is able to pass through the black cardboard cover, which transmits none of th violet rays of the sun or of the electric and one immediately inquires whet other bedies po s this property. It is soo covered that all bodies are transparent to this influence, but in very different degrees. “These experimental resuits and others lead to the cor sion that the transparency of different substances of the same thick- kess is mainty conditioned by their density; no other property is in the least comparable with this. The following experiments, how- ever, show -that density is not altogether alcne in its Influence. I experimented on the transparency of nearly the same thick- mess of glass, aluminum, calcspar and - Quartz. The density of these substances is nearly the same, and yet it was quite evi- dent that the spar was decidedly less trans- Parent than the other bodies, which were Yery much like each other in their behavior. I have not observed calespar fluoresce in a Banner comparable with glass. “With increasing thickness all bodies be- ecme less transparent. In order to find a Jaw connecting transparency with thickness I made some photographic observations, the photographic plate being partly covered with an increasing number of sheets of tinfoil. Photometric measurements will be undertaken when I am in possession of a suitable photometer. “As sooft as I had determined the trans- parency of different substances of various thicknesses I hastened to ascertain how the X rays behave when passed through a prism—whether they were refracted or not. “Using the fluorescent screen, I was una- MMe to discover any refraction at all in the case of the aluminum and the rubber prism. “Researches with prisms of denser metals have yielded up to now no certain results, ©n account of the small transparency and consequently lessened intensity of the transmitted ray. “Ta view of this state of things, and the : | plunder, } pens:on of sentence importance of the question whether X rays are refracted on passing from one medium to another, it is very satisfactory that this question can be attacked in another way than by means of prisms. Finely powdered substances {rf suffictent thicknesses only al- low a very little of the Incident light to pass through, and that is dispersed by re- fraction and reflection. Now, powdered substances ar2 quite as transparent to X rays as are solid bodies of equal mass. Hence it is proved that refraction and regu- lar reflection do not exist to a noticeable degree. The experiments were carried out with fiely powdered rock salt, with pul- verulent electrolytic silver, and with the zine powder much used in chemical work. In no case was any difference observed be- tween the transparency of the powdered and solid substance, either when usifig the fluorescent screen or the photographic plate. “it follows from what has been said that the X rays cannot be concentrated by lenses; a large vulcanized rubber and glass lens were without influence. The shadow of a round rod is darker in the middle than at the edge; that of tube filled with any sub- stauce more transparent than the material of the tube is lighter in the middle than at the edge. * * © “If we ask what X rays, which certainly cannot be cathode rays, really are, we are led at first sight, owing to their powerful fluorescing ard chemical properties,to think of ultra-violet light. But we immediately encounter serious objections. * * * “In other words We must assume that these ultra-violet rays behave in quite a different manner to any infra-red, visible, or ultra-violet rays hitherto known. I could tot bring myself to this conciusion, and I Have therefore, sought another explana- ton. = “There seems at least some connection between the new rays and light rays in the shadow pictures, and in the fluorescing and chemical activity of both kinds of rays. Now, it has been long known that besides the transverse light vibrations, longitudinal vibrations might take place in the ether, and, sording to the view of different phy- Sicists, must take place. Certainly their ex- uce has not up till now been made evi- » and their properties have not on that account been experimentally investigated. “May not the new rays be due to longi- dinal vibrations in the ether? * st admit that I have put more and h in this idea in the course of my » and it behooves me, therefors, to enrounce my suspicion, although I know well that thi mM requires further corrobeoratir rs. _Judse Cox Saturday sentenced Charles Kirkpatrick, alias Jones, alias Fisher, a young colored man, to four years’ isprison- ment in the Albany penitentiary at hard labor, upon a plea of guilty of housebreak- ing. The man brdke into the dwelling of Sebastian Goldsmith about 10 o'clock in the evening of the 9th of last month.
