S— THE EVENING ‘STAR, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1896-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA. The police authorities of Anacostia have been asked to look out for and arrest Charles Janney, who, it is alleged, shot and killed his half-brother, Cephas Gross, im a difficulty on the farm of Mr. Joseph P. Seliers, near Prince Frederick, Md., a day or two since. According to the story told by residents of the vicinity, Janney and Gross, who were aged eighteen and nineteen years, respectively, were engaged in a playful scuffle, which finally led to an angry dispute. Gross remarked to Janney that if he did not let him alone he would shoot him with a gun that was sitting in the room, the trouble occurring In the house where they lived. Janney immedi- ately se'zed the gun, an old army musket, and fired, the load of heavy shot tearing the top of his victim's head completely off. The murderer fled instantly, and has not yet been captured, although a strong posse has been searching for him. It is believed he has come to Washington. An entertainment for the benefit of the poor was given at Masonic Hall, Anacostia, Tuesday ewening, and only the presence of mind of Rev. T. B. Hughes, pastor of St. Teresa's Catholic Church, prevented a bad ident and perhaps loss of life. atertainment was under the auspices of one of the societies of the church, and ny tickets were sold that the hall was ded far beyond its capacity. In fact, said that almost every person in Ana- costia who was not sick In bed was present. This of itself was the cause of much dis- comfort, but matters were made a great deal worse when a crowd of men who had previously provided themselves with tick- ets insisted on forcing their way into the hall. ‘The noise made by these persons created much excitement, and in the midst of it several ladies fainted. If was only with the utmost difficulty that they were re- stored to consciousness. In the meantime the confusion became worse, and there is no telling what would have happened had not Father Hughes, who realized the threatened danger, stepped to the front of the platform, and after advising the audi- ence that no danger was to be apprehended if they remained in thgir places, directed the St. Elizabeth's Band, which was pres- ent, to play a lively air. This was done, and by the time the music was finished the audience had again become calm, and the remainder of the program was performed without interruption. Masonic Hall, Anacostia, was taxed to its capacity by members of the Masonic fra- ternity of the District, who were present to witness the cermonies attending the con- ferring of the third of Master Mason's degree by Anacostia Lodge, Np. 21, F. A. A. M.. on Mr. C. R. Dodge, sr. What lent peculiar interest to the ceremonies was the fact that the worshipful master of the lodge, Wilbur S. Dodge, was the son of the candidate. Large delegations were present from every sister lodge in the District, as well as many members of the Grand Lodge. After the conferring of the degree all present adjourned to the large banqueting hall, where a bounteous collation had been prepared by a committee of ladies, among whom were Mesdames Dodge, Kuhn, Gude and Walson, and the Misses Dodge, Kuhn and others. ‘The most reverend lain, C. B. Smith, invoked the Divine bless- ing, after which all present enjoyed the tempting spread. Toasts were responc to by prominent members of the frater and the assembly not disperse until a late hour, fully convinced that Anacostia Lodge deserves its fame for hospitality. ‘The marriage of Miss Anna Soper and Mr. William R. Montgomery, both of Ana- costia, took place last evening at St. Teresa's Catholic Church, before a large congregation. The ceremony was perform- ed by Rev. T. B. Hughes. A wedding sup- per to a few very intimate friends was given at the residence of the bride's par ents, on Jackson street. Mr. and Mr: Montgomery will reside on Lincoln s Anacos It is understood that Dr. W. C. Godding and a number of other prominent citizens of this portion of the District who have not heretofore manifested much public interest in the matter of rapid transit between Con- gress Heights and the city have signified their intention of extending their earnest support to Mr. A. E. Ranile and others who have succeeded :n having a bill intro- duced into Congress for the purpose of ePartering a rapid tratsit company wh¢ aim it shall be to annihilate the distane between the two poiats mentioned. It is stated that the receipts of the Ana- costia post office, a stat2ment of which has just beer prepared, w that they were more than double for 1805 what they were during 18M, and it is claimed that this is largely owing to the fact that The Star early last summer succeeded in getting the Post Office Department to increase the number of mail deliverizs and collections in the town. Special services wer: ternoon in the Emmaauel P. E. Church, The last sermon of the course thus far be- fore the Brotherhood of St. Andrew was delivered by Rev. Gilbert F. Williams, rec- tor of Christ P_ E. Church, navy yard. His subject was: “Why do we worship with a book or form of prayer?” Word has reached here of a ghastly find made by a colored man near Middletown, Prince George's county, Tuesday last. It is stated that a young man, while in the woods hunting for his hogs, was horrified by suddenly walking upon the skeleton of a man nearly hidden in the undergrowth. A few of the bones were scattered. but the frame was nearly intact. The shoes of the dead man were sitting tigatly laced near-by the bones, and a few remnants ef clothing Were scattered around. The skeleton is Supposed to be the remains of Llewellyn Atchison, an aged white man who mys- teriously diseppeared about two years ago, and it was thought at the time he was mur- dered. In January, 18M, Atchison left White Plains, a village on the Baltimore and Po- tomae railroad, a few miles from Anacos tia, a short time before sundown for home several miles away, and was never seen or heard of afterward, notwithstand- ing the continued efforts of scores of per- sons who searched woods, streams and wells to find him. ‘The conclusion was finally reached that he was waylatd and killed by an enemy, and his body carried to some distant point and disposed of. The finding of the skeleton within half_a mile of his home dispels the theory of ‘murder ard shows that the man xot bewildered and perished from the cold almost within sight of his home. Atchison was over ninety years of age, and up to the time of his dis- appearance traveled alone frequently for miles, being of a powerfal and vigorous constitution. An inquest was held on Atchi- son's remains, and a verdi>t was rendered by the jury that the death was caused by exposure. held yesterday af- ————— - FAIRFAX COURT HOUSE. There was a decided Increase in the attendance last evening, and the receipts amounted to over $100. The program consisted of a vocal solo by Miss Lillian Acker and a mandolin and guitar performance by Messrs. Weber and Veihmeyer. The dancing hall was well patronized, and the “light fantastic toe” was tripped until nearly midnight. The post office and paddle stand did a good business and many votes were cast for the candidates for various articles. A buggy and a gold- headed cane are among the things that are being raffied. Tomorrow night is the regular meeting of the Brockland Citizens’ Association, and it is expected that a number of questions of importance will be brought up for discus- sion. The matter of the inadequate trans- portation furnished by the Eckington rail- road is exciting considerable interest, and many residents have abandoned that line entirely and now go to and from the city upon the steam cars. It is proposed to unite the efforts of the Brookland citizens with those of the Eckington Association to di mand from Congress that no further ext sion of the Eckington line be granted until it furnishes proper transportation over the teétritory it now has. The juvenile soiree of Miss Sarah Willard Howe's pupils that was announced for to- morrow night at the town hall has been postponed until further notice on account of the illness of many of the children. Great preparations are being made for the laying of the corner stone of the new Cath- olic church next Sunday afternoon. It is expected that this will bring together one of the largest gatherings of the clergy had in the District since the same ceremony at the Catholic University. —————— 'TAKOMA PARK. Mrs. D. Gray Purman of North Takoma gave a pink luncheon Saturday last to a few friends, which, in dainty appointment and choice menu, ranked among the events of the season. The beautiful home of the hostess was thrown open for the entertain- ment of her guests, who were welcomed upon their arrival by this lady in her usual dignified and courteous manner, assisted by Miss Purman and Miss Elizabeth Purman. The floral display of pinks and smilax, with candles, under soft, pink shades, lent a most pleasing effect. Covers were laid for six, viz: Mrs. B. F. Gilbert, Mrs. S. S.
