BEAT THE MULE One of the Cases in the Police Court Bome More Results of the Election— Men Who Were Looking for Work. William Thomas,a colored boy who drives @ mule for John H. Blundon, was arrested yesterday for cruelly treating the animal in his charge, and his employer appeared in court this morning as a witness against him. The complaint was that he used a stick on the animal, and when the dump was reached blood was cozing from an ugly wound that had been inflicted in the manner stated. There was no occasion for him to urge the animal in this way, said his employer, except that he was in a hurry to reach the dump in order to leaf ebeut the fire. In his own behalf the boy said that he used his foot on the mule and knocked a scab off an old soré. There was another witness who saw the boy use a Btic and a fine of $10 was imposed. In default of fine the boy went down for a month. Edward Foley and Bernard O’Brien, young men who had probably participated in the election Tuesday afternoon, were In Judge Kimball's procession for disorderly conduct, on complaint of Saloonkeeper Behlotterkach. “They came in my saloon last night,” the r said, nd demanded whisky. HOLLAND’S ASSAILANT.” Colbert Held for the Grand Jury Today. . The colored man, Frederick, alias Albert Colbert, charged with assault and battery with intent to kill Mr. Millard F. Holland of No. 411 ist street northeast, in Decem- ber last, was put on trial in the Police Court today, Lawyer Martin representing him. A plea of not guilty was entered. Mr. Holland testified that early in Octo- ber he employed the defendant to do some sodding for him, and agreed to pay him $t for the work, which was to include manur; ing the grass later in the season. He with- held twenty-five cents for the manuring, but the colored man did not return to fin- ish the work, and he employed another man, to whom he paid fifty cents for the manuring. : This was about the last of November, and two days before Christmas Colbert came with a load of manure and wanted to do the work. Witness told him he did not want it, as another man had done the work. Some words passed between them, but just what they were witness could not remember, nor could he remember anything of the assault. He remained fully uncon- scious for two days, and was partly uncon- scious about a week. + On crovs-examination witaess said he was almost pesitive that the defendant is the man who did the sodding. Witness was confined to his house for four weeks. Dr. Storch, who attended the inju-ed man, gave evidence concerning the serious mature of the injuries inflicted. While the patient has greatly improved, he may yet suffer from the effects of the injur Wit- ness described the vgiy cut on M Hol- land’s head, which had been made with a spade, and said the wound would probably have proved fatal hae not the bone been thi and had not the instrument glanced. iceman Wheeler testified to the airest and the centradictery statements made by the prison Caleb bay, colored, testified that he spoke to Colbert about doing Mr. Holland's work, and he (Colbert) said he would do the work. Witness said he knew Mr. Holland, and had put in coal for him several times. Several other witnesses were examined, and the prisoner was held in $100 Lond for the grand jury ———— A $15,000 Portrait for the Capitol. ‘To the Editor of The Evening Star: The following appeared in Tuesday’s Sta Mr. Voorhees has introduced in the Sen- ate a bill appropriating $15, to purshase a life-size oil painting of the late Abraham Lincoln (painted by G. W. F. Travis), to be hung in the United States Capitol. The usual price for portraits rang2s from $50 to $2,000." A painter of fame anu prom- inence considers the latter a good price. A man of enormous celebrity might get as high es $15,000. This Mr. Travis—whoever he may be—certainly does not belong to the latter class. I doubt very much if he does to the former. . Possibly the printer has made $150 read $15,000. Otherwise Mr. Voorhees—presum- ably quite ignorant of such matters—has ap- parently been led into irdcrsing a scheme to make the government pay from ten to one hundred times the market price for a por- trait.
