THE EVENING STAR, MONDAY, JANUARY 27, 1896-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA. For several months the residents of Ana- costia and its suburbs, principally Good Hope and Twining City, have been looking every Sunday for trouble because of the visits of many men from Washington to a road house located in Prince George's county, Md., about two miles from Anacos- tia. Yesterday the trouble arrived. Fortu- nately, Sergt. Anderson of the Anacostia substation was close to the scene, and, it is likely, prevented matters becoming worse. Two bicyclists were riding on the Naylor road near the road house above referred to, hen they were attacked with stones by ve men, who said their names are William Milstead, Frank Seepper, Charles Chloser, William Grissett and John Webster. The young men were put to flight, and It is believed escaped serious injury, but their assailants were followed to Twining City, where Sergt. Anderson placed the entire party under arrest, and subsequently sent them to the fifth precinct station, where they were locked up to await a hearing. The accused claimed to be so much intox- feated as not to be fully aware of what they had done to the bicyclists, and as- serted that they had secured their liquor at the road house in Maryland before men- tioned, which is, it is alleged, kept open every Sunday. Considerable alarm is felt across the Dis- trict line in Maryland over the report that a mad dog wa in the vicinity Saturday, and that a number of dogs belonging to farmers of the neighborhood were bitten by it. The dog supposed to be rabid escaped, but a close watch is being kept on all the animals of that kind, and upon the display of the slightest reason for believing that a dog has the rabies his owner will at once have him killed. The residents of that part of Prince George's county, Md., adjacent to the Dis- trict line were horrified to learn a day or two since that Mrs. Burniss Payne, who, with her aged husband, formerly resided near the Marlboro’ road, was burned to death on their farm near Stevens’ Mill, Va., last week. Mr. Payne had set fire toa pile of brush, but the blaze got into a fence and was destroying it, when Mrs. Payne went to the rescue, and was caught in the flames and burned, and before assistance could be rendered she was fatally injured. Playing in the chess tournament hereto- fore referred to in ‘The Star will, ft ts un- derstood, commence tomorrow nizht. It ts stated that no more entries will be taken, at the meeting of competitors lay. the question will be decided as to at the three prizes which are to be rded shall consist of. It is probable that one or more of tne players whose name has been announced will withdraw from the field before the tourney begins. The following have been elected officers of Anacostia Lodge of Good Templars for the ensuing term: Mr. George O. Webster, chief templar; Miss Annette Anderson, vice templar; Mr. W. T. In response to a gene lesire on the part of the citizens of Anwcostia, as well as those of the voters who ezpect to partici pate in the election tomorrow for delegates to Sst.
