14 THE EVENING STAR, TUESDAY, JANUARY 14, 1896-SIXTEEN PAGES. - SUBURBAN NEWS —_—~——_—_ ANACOSTIA. The annual meeting of the directors of the Anacostia and Potomac Railway Com- pany was held today at the office of the company in Anacostia, and the following officers for the ensuing year chosen: Presi- dent, Mr. H. A. Griswold, re-elected; vice president, Mr. Harry L. Welles; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. B. Pitcher, re-elected; general superintendent, Mr. J. D. Newton. The offices of vice president and general superintendent were created at the annual meetingof the r*ockholders, which was held yesterday, whtu the following were elected directors for the year 1896: Messrs. H. A. Griswold, Thomas E. Smithson, Robinson Riley, Henry C. McCauley, Joseph Z. Wil- — Harry L. Welles and James E. Hal- ¥. Previous to the election of directors, Pres- ident Griswold submitted his annual re- port, which gave in detail the operations of the past year. There had, he said, been a slight decrease in the traffic, but the prop- erty of the company is all in first-class condition. ‘The report was accepted and a resolution adopted indorsing the management, as was also a resolution empowering the president to give permission to the Pole Gas Motor Company of the District of Columbia to test one of their cars when it shall be com- pleted on the company’s tracks. Intelligence has reached Anacostia that Joseph +H. Smith, a man of about forty years of age, whose home is just across the District line in Maryland, was picked up in am unconscious condition in Baltimore a few days ago, and from the surrounding circumstances is thought to have attempted to_commit suicide. Smith was taken to 2 hespital, where at last accounts he was in @ precarious condition. Mr. Horace Crozier of Suitland, one of thé commissioners of Prince George’s coun- ty; Md., has just recovered from a serious relapse into an illness which resulted from an accident which happened during last summer. At that time the horses attached to a large farm wagon in which Mr. Crozier was riding ran away, and Mr. Crozier was thrown out of the vehicle, which passed over his body and limbs, in- juring him severely. He, however, appear- ed.to entirely recover, but some time since hig wounds broke out afresh, and he is only now, after a lapse of some weeks, able to be out of doors, and is still compelled to use a cane to assist him in walking. Entertainments for the amusement of the inmates of St. Elizabeth Asylum similar to those given with so much success last win- ter have again been adopted, and the first for this season was given a few evenings since. Dr. A. H. Witmer, assistant super- intendant, added greatly to the pleasures of those present by displaying some beau- tiful stereopticon views, which were much admired by all who saw them. The music was furnished by the band attached to the institution. Arrangements for the proposed chess tournament, already referred to in The Star, which, it is hoped by those interested, will come off shortly, are progressing very satisfactorily, and great interest is being taken in the matter. The entries so far are: Messrs. Joseph Downs, Andrew J. Boyer, Joseph Miller, August Miller, P. S. Quaid and Drs. R. A. Pyles, J. A. Watson and C. H. Weiss of Anacostia wd Messrs. Payne and Meitzler of Washington. Three prizes will be given. The Woman's Christian Temperance Union held services in Haines’ Hall, Ana- costia, Sunday afterncon. The large room was filled to overflowing, and several rous- ing temperance speeches were made. Among those who took part were the pres- ident, Mrs. E. L. Sherwood; Mr. Mayse, a chief of the Cherokee Nation, eighty-seven years old, who made a good speech; Revs. George Bowman, Joseph B. North and H. T. Stevenson. The Forest Club gave a delightful danc- ing party at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Berry, Bowieville, Prince George's county, Md., Saturday night. The Christmas entertainment given by the scholars of Broosteld Sunday school an evening or two since was a charming af- fair. The program consisted of recitations and musical exercises. The singing of the Misses Myrtle and Olive Gibbons and the recitations by Miss Clara Friedland and others were greatly admired. Miss Eva Garner was organist, and Mr. W. W. Wil- liams acted as Santa Claus and distributed the gifts to the children. The selection by mutual consent of all parties concerned in the affairs of the late herdic line of Messts. R. W. Bishop, J. H. Ralston and Walter A. Johnson as receiv- ers gives entire satisfaction to the creditors of the concern in Anacostia. it is understood that Rev. Mr. McCurdy, a student of Columbian University, whose home is in Baltimore, will have charge for the future of the Fort Foote Memorial Bap- tist Mission, as assistant to Rev. H. T. Stevenson, pastor of the Anacostia Baptist Church, who has heretofore had the re- sponsibility of its management. ‘The quarterly meeting of the District W. Cc. T. U. is being held today at the Ana- costia Baptist Church. Miss Emma Beyer, daughter of Mr. Jas. Beyer of Giesboro’, is seriously ill. Master Carl Rhodes, who has been spend- ing some weeks with relatives in Ana- costia, has returned to his studies at the institute in Kendall Green. GAITHERSBURG. Saturday and Sunday Presiding Elder Rev. Dr. J. S. Hutchison of Baltimore held the fourth quarterly conference of Gaithers- burg circuit, M. E. Church South, at this point. Large congregations greeted him on both mcrnings. Rev. Wm. C. Brian was detained in Elli- cott City, where a few days ago he was taken ill while visiting relatives, and his congregations were disappointed in hearing iim preach Sunday. Mr. Wm. Burdette Mathews of Washing- ton, president of the Washington dis- trict, Epworth League, Sunday evening at Epwerth M. E. Church installed the recently elected officers of Gaithersburg Chapter and afterward conducted the de- votional exercises of the evening. This service was a new departure and highly enjoyed by a large attendance of leaguers. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Thomas of Culpeper, Va., have returned to that town after a lengthy sojourn here with Mr. Levin Thom- es. Aubrey Council, No. 143, Jr. O. U. A. M., of Damascus, has installed the following of- ficers for the new term: Past councilor, A.M. Bowman; councilor, L. E. Price; vice coun- cilor, Joseph Mount; secretary, J. L. Bur- detie; financial secretary, John F. Boyer; treasurer, Levi Pearce; chaplain, C. W. Day; assistant secretary, Wooton Young; arden, €. Crawford; conductor, Frank Hil- ton: inside sentinel, Clarence Hilton; out- side sentinel, Walter Wartleld. Charles R. Young, a prominent merchant of Cedar Grove, died very unexpectedly a few days ago. At the town council’s January month- ly meeting, besides the passing of vari- ©us accounts presented, the bailiff was authorized to give notice to all dog owners to renew thelr dog tags for 1896. One dollar per tag fs the license re- avired. On the same day the case of John F. Carlisle for violation of law in respect to building lines was heard in equity court before Judge Henderson, at Rockville. State's Attorney Kilgour appeared for Mr. Carlisle, and the council was represented by Wm. B. Baker of Washington and R. Dorsey Trundle, corporation attorney. The point at stake is the claimed unconstitution- ality of the laws passed by the town coun- cil. Judge Henderson reserved his decision. Miss Eliza Henry of Calvert county is the guest of relatives here. —__——__ LAUREL. A specia! session of the city council will be held tonight, when Mayor Phelps will submit a message, it is understood, which will c«ntain many important recommenda- tions. The funeral of Mr. Herbert Snowden, who died of pneumonia in Baltimore Sunday night, after oh illness of five days, took place here this afterncon at St. Philip's Episcopal Church. Mr. Snowden was in his twenty-seventh year, and was a son of the late John Snowden of this county. His mother, Mrs. Sarah E. Snowden, resides near here. Mr. Snowden was a native of this county and resided here until several years ago, when he went to Baltimore. He held positions in the Western Maryland Railroad Company and in the Merchant and Miners’ Transportation Company At the time of his death he was assistant cash- fer in the city collector's office of Balti- more. His family is ore of the oldest and best known in this state. He was a brother- in-law of ex-Mayor Chas. H. Stanley. His mother was a niece of the late Johns Hop- kins of Baltimore. From the New York World. Nearly every man’ who has sent in a sketch is now at Washington looking after his interests. Hence a dozen jealous bieker- ings and little quarrels. Everything so far pales into insignifi- cance beside the row between J. Massey Rhind and Charles H. Niehaus, the well- known New York sculptors. Charges of plagiarism and threats-of personal violence are said to have passed between the two. For years past Rhind and Niehaus have been artistic rivals. Each designed one of the famous bronze doors of old Trinity Church, and they have competed against one another many times in their career. Both are thought to stand good chances for the Sherman prize. The trouble arose Thursday, when Niehaus walked into the gallery of the half in which are the models waiting the decision of the experts, and made the bold assertion that one of the two sketches he had submitted was sure of the prize. J. Massey Rhind took up the challenge and said that Mr. Niehaus might reckon both of his sketches out of the com- petition, for the judges would instantly de- tect the fact that they were copied from famous European pieces of sculpture. “You're a Scotchman,” said Niehaus, “and have no right to compete.for the American prize.” < “Ycu're an_American with a German name, and a Dutchman by instinct; Rhind is said to have retorted. ‘““Why don't you take down those photos of the Hahnemann monument; it’s a copy of the Gil Blas in Vienna, and every one knows it.’ Mr. Niehaus has pinned behind the Sher- man model photographs of the monument ot Hahnemann, the father of homeopathy upon which he is now working and whic! won for him a big prize at the beginning of last year. It was to these Mr. Rhind re- fer-ed. Niehaus only glared angrily, and Rhind went out of the building with a happy smile on his face. In an hour he was back again with a parcel under his arm. When he opened this he revealed to an inquisitive group of fellow-sculptors several photo- graphs. It was thought that Mr. Rhind was going to follow the example of his rival and pin up the photographs of his own achievements in art, but he only se- lected two and carefully fastened them to the wall. Upon examination both photos bore a striking resemblance of the sketches submitted by Charles H. Niehaus. One represented the world-renowned Colleoni statue in Florence, the work of the six- teenth century sculptor, Verrochio. The other was a photograph of an equally famous statue of Kaiser Wiiliam in Berlin. When Mr. Niehaus heard the laughter which greeted his rival’s clever move, and saw the photographs, he made a step or two as if to tear them from the wall. “Not a bit,” said Rhind. “If you put up photographs, so shall I; and we will let the committee know where you get your in- spirations from.” The little German-American sculptor is a pigmy beside his stalwart Scotch com- rade in art, but he is plucky and made an- other move in the direction of the photo- graphs. “Just try that again,” Mr. Rhind ts re- ported to have said, ‘and I'll drop you over this gallery.” As the drop in question is forty feet to a stone floor, hostilities were suspended for a time. 3 With the lull of peace Rhind began to count the cost of his quarrel, and is said to have feared that Niehaus would retaliate in some way. To protect his photegraphs and model, he accordingly secured a mes- senger and sent the boy out to purchase a chair. Upon this chair J. Massey Rhind is said to have gat during the waking hours of the last three days, to the intense amusement of every one connected with the Sherman statue competition. With Scotch doggedness he will sit there until Si competition is decided and his fate nown. ——_—_-e-+___ SHOT THE FLOOR WALKER. A Female Clerk Charged Him With Ungentlemanly Conduct. A sensational shcoting occurred in the large dry gcods house of L. S. Ayres & Company, in Washington street, Indian- apolis, yesterday morning. Miss Ruth Gordon, a clerk, fired two shots at Perry Purviance, a floor walker. One shot made an abrasion on Purviance’s side. ‘The second shot failed to take effect, and Purviance grabbed and overpowered his assailant before she could fire again. Miss Gordon charged Purviance with ungentle- manly conduct toward her. Purviance is married. The shooting caused a panic among the army of clerks. Miss Gordon was reported at police headquarters. coe Suicide at The Plains. Elmer W.
